On my last trip to NYC, in a blizzard, we discovered some info that even surprised my New York Brother-in-law.
First of all the train from EWR is the best way to get into the city. No delays at the tunnel, or bridges. And it takes you into the center of Mahatten where you can catch the subway to everwhere.
Now for the subway. It has changed over to a card system, like Washington or Chicago. One of the options on the unlimited menu is an all day hopper pass for only $4.00. The pass can also be used on the city bus system. It is a very affordable way to see New York.
Some museums have free evenings where no admission is charged. See the city sites and shopping in the day museums at night. Here is a site with list of museums and times:

TV shows give out standby tickets. If the weather is bad, people do not show up and it is worth the time to get a ticket or two. This the best site I found for info:

Thanks for the info. Yes NewYork is a great place to visit. I also use that $4,00 metro card. I think they try to keep it a secret. I did not know about EWR though.Just a question on that. Is that the bus to the Port Authority Station & how much does it cost ?

No, the EWR monorail as of last spring takes you to the NJ transit railway station. There you can catch a train to NYC or Philadelphia. The fare to New York is around $10.00. Once you get to port authority you can hop the subway just a few steps from the train station.

Thanks Coyne for the helpful posting about NYC. We were just discussing today at work which airport is the best to fly into to get easy and affordable transportation into the city. I will certainly print it and give it to my co-worker.

Thanks for that info. IIRC, they also have a multiple (5?) day metro cards instead of buying one every single day.
Last time I went, I booked a hotel before on Priceline, got a 4* for $98+taxes (credit card is charged straight away and no refunds). With so many airlines having multiple flights to JFK/EWR, I wasn't too concerned about not getting there.
On previous trips, never got anything for under $200 with airline rates.
