I am planning a trip to Alaska this summer. I know summertime is peak time for Alaska (especially June/July). I am planning on traveling to Alaska in August. My logic thinking on this is by mid-August the peak tourist season should start simmering down. At this point, I like to know the best days to arrive/depart ANC. A fellow airline employee suggested to fly on the days when cruise ships are not in ports (I am not going on a cruise). I do not know when or what days the ships come and go. Any input would be great.

The best days to fly would be Tue-Thurs and I would recommend looking at the earliest flights in the morning from sea and the night flights from anc to the lower 48. We have approximately 20 flights a day between the two cities in the summer. This year I believe there will also be 3 flights per day nonstop pdx/anc and at least one lax/anc, sfo/anc and ord/anc. I have nonrevved at all times of the summer with a high rate of success due to the shear number of flights. If your final destination is anywhere other than anc, let me know and I can give you more specific information. The only times that are particularly difficult are around holidays and during the peak salmon seasons. Salmon season is usually early June, late July and early-mid September. You want to avoid those or you could potentially get stuck for days. As we get closer to the time you want to fly, contact me and I'll check loads for you. If you have specific dates already, I can see how the flights are allocated (price wise) and that will tell us a lot.

I'm not sure about August, But we had really good luck traveling last year on the off peak days around July fourth. A combination like leaving on June 30th and coming back on July 4th could be a winner. Very few people tend to travel on the holiday itself. That should be especially true this year with it falling on a Friday.
