We (family of 3) will be in New York mid-May for 3 nights and I am looking for accommodation - unfortunately my budget is at the lower end of the scale for New York (up to $200.00 - $250.00 a night) http://www.nonrev.net/forums/style_e...R#>/unsure.gif . At the moment I am thinking of staying at either a RedRoof Inn or La Quinta in Manhattan or Travel Inn or possibly staying in the Queens area. The accommodation in New Jersey is much cheaper but I'm not sure how long it takes to get to Manhattan.
I have seen on the internet lots of apartments for rent in Manhattan which would be cheaper but I'm not sure about renting an apartment - ie whether the apartment looks like the pictures posted on the internet (like sometimes things that look too good to be true...)
So, we will be flying into and out of JFK and basically want somewhere close to public transport (but not too noisy!) safe & clean to sleep as we will be out doing all the usual touristy things during the day so if anyone has any ideas or recommendations please let me know.
Thanks

are you interested in staying in the city?
there are some really decent apts--one I used to like alot if you can find it is in chelsea--w 24th street--loft rooms. former owner is no longer there for me to contact, but if you come across an agent, I'd recommend any of the apts
there La Quinta is ok hotel in manhattan. if you want to do the commute--try five towns 516-321-2600 and see what they offer for qantas employees--the other burb hotel is sunrise/executive inn in long island--airline friendly, too and across from major grocery and train station--pretty easy trip into the city.
ck the Wolcott at 31st--good location nr times square--www.wolcott.com/2360 or call for airline disc 212-268-2900. mother's day and a major accessories/fashion wk is second week in may--hope it's not when you want to go. good luck--some lNY ocals will prob be better help...

Thanks,
I don't mind not staying in the city if I get somewhere nice to stay. And as long as it is easy and doesn't take too long to get into the city.
The apartments for rent I am thinking about are:-
An apartment in Times Square, Midtown Manhattan through wsnyc
a one bedroom apartment in Chelsea at 24th street and 8th avenue (although they charge a $100.00 cleaning fee on top of the daily rate) through betterthanamotel
An apartment through SeaSkiSunVacations.com
Has anyone heard of these and/or rented an apartment from them?

Newark Airport to Penn Station (NYC) takes about 25 mins by train and they run every 10 or 15 minutes into the city. It cost about $12. I have never stayed downtown but I would like to one of these days too.
-
If that rate for Chelsea includes taxes, it's a good buy--nice apt pics! great neighborhood, too.Considering any hotel rate adds on 10% + tourist/occupancy fee/bed Our brownstone was 24th @ 8th next to the Krisha center. Yours must be a new bldg--not one I know, but could be rehabbed. Bus runs north at that corner on 8th and subway is both directions right there, too. Ask owner if they'll waive cleaning fee or half it for referrals thru your airline connections.
You might want to get transit/tourist card/pass too if you're 3 going everywhere. word of advice on Empire State Bldg--go early!! it can take hours to get up there. ck out rockefeller observatory instead maybe?? The circle line boat tour pre-sunset is good.
I couldn't find the wsnyc info to compare for you. I spent 15 yrs working the fashion mkts in NYC--paid my own expenses so it had to be reasonable--not sure if I would want to do it again!!
Hope that helps a little. Good luck and keep us posted!!
PS--the train for Long Island/Sunrise Exec Inn Hotels is about $15/day for 3 RT's and the room rate there is around $150 tax incl--laundry facilities, JFK shuttle is free.
About the same for Five Towns Motel but not as nice by any means--they have free shuttle for JFK and LGA but I've never taken the train into the city.
-
had to add that tripadvisor.com has some red flags about wsnyc as well as other apt rental agencies.
I'm not sure I'd do the apt thing unless I really knew what I was doing--there are city hotels in every price range with promos etc that can take a triple booking. At least I would NEVER give CC details via email w/out knowing address (confirmed--there are scams regarding apt bldgs that don't exist) and phone (not just cel) etc.

Thanks, for the information - its very helpful
I am hesitant about the apartments so think I will scrap that idea altogether. I think I would feel much more comfortable in a hotel.

Vicki,
Try emaling the New Yorker hotel ( www.newyorkerhotel.com ) and see what travel industry rate they will offer you. Good location and on the E-line from JFK.
-
Thanks Paul, I have just had a look at their site - hotel looks nice and clean and central. I have just emailed them so hopefully they have vacancies and give a good airline discount http://www.nonrev.net/forums/style_e...#>/biggrin.gif Have you stayed there?
Also, am just looking at tours and the subway passes.
Has anyone used Sightseeing world - am thinking at the moment that a double decker bus sounds easy to hop on and off!

Vicki,
I've stayed there several times before ... It's not the poshest in the world but very acceptable and in a great location. The E-line from JFK has a station just across the road ( its far faster and cheaper than a cab ) and you just come out of the subway, cross the road and you are at the hotel. There are several restuarants nearby ( of all price ranges ) for food and the subway is 2 minutes away. You can get an unlimited day ride pass on the subway and bus for USD 7.50 and if you get it at the airport it will pay for the subway journey in from JFK.
The tour might well be OK but remember that traffic moves VERY slowly in New York and you could easily spend most of your time sitting on the bus in traffic. If the family can cope with it I'd get the day pass on the subway/bus and plan your own sightseeing ( thats what we did ... but then that was with no kids in tow ). Its also quite easy to walk between some of the sights and you get to see some of the real city.

I stayed at the New Yorker for several year (when I had a corp discount). The rooms vary so much so if you're really nice at check-in and ask for an upgrade, they might give you something really nice--I guess it depends on occupancy. I've had mini suites and huge suites w/balconies and teeny rooms, Do your best and charm them! Glad you got a good rate. Their diner is great for breakfast and the Empire Diner is close, too. Hop on/off bus is fun but yes, it can be faster to walk! If you have library with Access Guide or Eyewitness Guide to NYC to borrow--they are 2 of the best and easiest to use. Good idea to get the transport pass--I think you still pay the extra $5 for the Skytrain to the E line, but not positive--it's been a while. Have a great time and eat a NY Tube Steak (street hotdog) for me--and get combo manicure/pedicure--one of the last cheap things in the city!
-
Thanks again, unfortunately I heard back from the New Yorker today and they only have queen rooms for $259.00 per night but they said the room would only take two so would need two rooms. Pity, because it looked like a nice hotel and would save money with airport transfers too.
-
just in case--ask them about a double double.
-
Thanks for your all help.
Can't believe my luck - have managed to get a room at the Wolcott so is all booked & confirmed!!!! http://www.nonrev.net/forums/style_e...#>/biggrin.gif
Just having a look at their website which says it takes 2 to 3 hours to get there by train from JFK ??? (though when I look on google maps it shows it is only about 4 minutes drive from the New Yorker). Does that sound right?
From John F. Kennedy Airport
Get the JFK air train to Howard Beach Station outside of baggage claim. Take the "A" train to 34th Street Penn Station. Walk East to Broadway turn south (right) to 31st Street. The hotel is located between 5th Ave. and Broadway. This is the long way to get to the hotel, about 2-3 hours.
Air Train - $5 per person
Subway - $2 per person
The 6 local train stops at 33rd street and Park Ave. South. Walk west past Madison Ave. to 5th Ave. Turn (south) left to 31st Street.
Penn. Station / Madison Square Garden. All other trains stop at Penn. Station. Walk east to Broadway turn south (right) to 31st Street. The Hotel is located between 5th Ave. and Broadway.
-
some sort of error about 2-3 hrs (maybe by taxi in rush hour!)
should take around 1+ hrs to take both trains to Penn. when I go all the way north to 215th street I allow 1 1/2-2 hrs
Glad you got res'd at Wolcott--hope your rate was good--did you get a studio?
Keep us posted.

Glad that it doesn't take 2-3 hours by subway to get there!
I was really glad to book the accommodation especially after I had rung the previous day and there was no availability so was definitely worth taking your advice and checking again!
Thanks http://www.nonrev.net/forums/style_e...#>/biggrin.gif

If you travelled between JFK and Manhattan, catch Airport Shuttle Bus. It directly bring you to Grand Central Station at 42nd East. The journey is 45 minutes. 1 way $15, return is 27.
http://www.ny.com/cgibin/frame.cgi?url=htt...ame/travel.html
I was travelled from JFK to Manhattan on 3Apr and return on 5Apr.
On the way from JFK to downtown, I was trying to catch Metro to save $$. Where you get on Air Train from JKF at any terminal to Jamica Station. Then change to Metro Line E.
It was $5 for Air Train (5-10 minutes) and $2 (1 hour) for Metro. However, you need to walk through stairs, dirty stations, narrow gate turnstile with your bulky bags. It was like a 2 hours journey. My companion keep on yelling me for the stairs and stinks smell.
On the way back to JFK, I pick airport shuttle bus from Grand Central. Throw all my bags to the driver, sleep for 40 minutes, and I was there! It's magic. Remember to tip the driver http://www.nonrev.net/forums/style_e..._DIR#>/sad.gif That's America.

When I used the Subway to get into Manhattan last time from JFK .. caught connection to Jamaica Station, bought Day Pass, walked onto nice big clean platform, got on train and sat down. Did not need to move until I got off the train at 34th street, no corridors, no connections ... dead easy.... same on return journey.
Have previously used coach/taxi and in all cases been really stressed about making it to the airport in time as have always had problems with traffic/accidents on freeways.
I think a lot depends upon where your hotel is as Grand Central is still a long hike from many hotels !!
