San Jose del Cabo
I got the itch to go to Cabo San Lucas/San Jose del Cabo, however, I was thinking also of getting up to LA PAZ area and checking it out there. Would kind of like to check out the Sea of Cortez. Read about the old whaling grounds there around in the 1800's being a sperm whale spawning area would make for good whale hunting. I also hear its quite rich with marine life, lots of dolphins and seals.
Not interested in any kind of cruise ship, however, was interested in maybe doing some kind of day trip to Isla Espiritu Santo. All this of course, maybe spending a day or two in La Paz, then making my way down to the ARCOS area at the end of the land there in Cabo San Lucas. Trying to figure how I would do this. Rent a car, take a bus. We don't fly into La Paz, would have to fly there via Aero Mexico out of Mexico City. I think from where we fly into at San Jose del Cabo, shows aprox 91 miles to La Paz. Don't know how the highways are, but I hear its quite mountainous drive.
Does anyone have any experience outside of the resort area of Cabo? Particularily La Paz? I remember my ship passing by 250 miles south of Baja to the Islas Revillagigedos, passing ISLA SOCORRO. This was in 1988. It was a great experience and a real sound feeling, beautiful day. I wouldn't mind taking maybe some hopper to the island and checking it out for the day. See what I missed from being on the island. So far, what I see online is boat trips to the island for mostly scuba divers. I just want to get in and out of the island. Not get too raped on the charges either.

Not enough money out there to get me to go to Mexico right now. I have no desire to be a statistic. :) Good luck, though!

Statistic for what? They are having a drug war there. Stay clear of that situation and you shouldn't have a problem. You can get shot going to your local convenient store here in the states. Of course, you flash your dough around and act like a target, you may just turn out to be one.

That is all true......just no desire to place myself into a known war zone. No offense meant, just throwing out an opinion.

I know what you mean. Mexico does seem to dominate the headlines often about some decapitated heads found stacked near acid barrels in Juarez. I wouldn't let the tourist thing bother me too much, especially around Cabo, Cancun, Cozumel resorts. I'd say to get caught up in a crossfire in those resorts the chances are quite slim. Maybe a bit higher around Acapulco but that's a city of lots of population in comparison to the rest of the resorts.
