Vera de la crux
Anyone been to Veracruz, Mexico? Thinking of making a run there. Got some outstanding tips on it from a lady that serves me sandwiches at subway from Mexico City, says its great. My interest there is to check out an old Spanish Fort there. Interesting history. It was where Sir Francis Drake got his anti-Spain kick start and almost got killed there. He was selling slaves with his uncle when a Spanish Flotilla sailed into the harbor and captured 3 of 5 vessels. He narrowly escaped and endured some serious hardships at sea to the brink of starvation. Also, Veracruz is where HERNANDO CORTEZ launched his conquest against the Aztec empire. Also where U.S. forces landed in the war with Mexico in the 1840's and followed along Cortez's footsteps into Mexico City. Only thing that sux is the small planes we fly there, those embrair 50 seaters which are unpredicable as hell. I'll just take a chance, if it gets too hairy, I'll fly into Mexico City which we fly like a dozen flights a day there. I'll do this after a vegas run. Oh, the name of the fort????? SAN JUAN DE ULUA.

You do know we fly into VER, right? You'd be stuck on an ERJ for a while, but you wouldn't have to worry about getting there from MEX. Then again, some of those IAH-Mexico flights can be tough, especially the smaller ERJ-only cities.

Yes but it all depends on the time you go. Getting there is the main thing, getting back, then time to worry but not really. I just checked out another interesting "Walled city" called the BALUARTE DE SANTIAGO which has some very cool pics on the internet. Definately have to go now that I saw those. Very neat indeed. Veracruz seems to be off the beaten path to alot of tourist. I understand that there is a HUGE Cuban community there and they play some mean jams at night with live entertainment in the parks. Just a matter of when I do this.
