I was there in February. We landed in Guatemala City, and about an hour drive to the south and west, we ended up in the volcanic scenic town of Antigua. This was the head of government in most of Central America down to Costa Rica. Powerful men ruled from Antigua. There are many ruins from the Franciscans and old churches. It is a real historical place. The streets are cobbled, and seem to outlive generations of people. These streets were built in its current form in the 1700's. Cars and trucks ride on those streets today. We stayed in a room for 15 bucks. Pensiones, and hostels, along with fine expensive hotels are a dime a dozen in Antigua. The bar scene and nightlife is excellent. Alot of European backpackers, and some attending Spanish learning schools....gotta go.
