I hear everyone talking about Costa Rica about visiting VOLCAN IRAZU or VOLCAN Aerenal. I don't know why the tourism industry pushes so much for those places. VOLCAN POAS is about as nicest volcano you will ever see. The kicker is that this volcano is only 1.5 hour drive from the airport in ALAJUELA, Costa Rica. Alajuela is the international airport (Santa Maria) when most people think that the flights go right into SJO or SAN JOSE. This is not the case, and a cab ride to downtown cost 30 bucks for the nine mile trip ONE WAY. You can take a bus to SAN JOSE for less than a buck, right outside the airport. I paid 100 bucks for a taxi driver to take me and the wife up to POAS and he waited for us as we walked around the National Park. It was well worth the trip, and along the way, he stopped in a coffee plantation where we could have a cup of coffee and check out the beautiful area up the mountain. Snapped some good pics. Here they are.

Yup, Poas is the winner. We did CR for 2 weeks around xmas '98 - my son (now the NW pilot) was studying 6 months in San Jose - and we loved it. Saw the northwest (Guanacaste), Monte Verde Cloud Forest, Tobagon + Arenal, and lots more, and then the Southeast, Caribbean coast. What I remember best about Poas were those giant plants along the roadside - they show very well in your photo - and a small fuming lake at the top of an unbelievable shade of blue-green. But I wouldn't discount Arenal, if only because of its proximity to one of CR's - maybe THE - major attractions. the Tobagon hot springs. What a blast they are, all thanks to Mother Nature. We must have spent 4 hours there, until we were prunes.

I am not about discounting anything. I definately plan a return trip and if anything, to check out the rest of the place. Wanna check out CARTAGO and IRAZU volcano. Volcan Poas was one of those places that stuck to my mind for many years. I was 12 when I first went there. That's 32 years ago. (Not showing my age eh?)
