Buddy Pass Question

Hi there,

I had a few questions regarding an upcoming trip I am taking. I would ask the employee giving me the Buddy Pass but he is out of town for a few days....

I was planning on paying for the pass to United instead of it coming out of his paycheck but I had the following questions:

1) If I list (and pay) for Biz/First from EWR-EDI (only 2 cabins of service, so it is allowed) but get economy he says there are no refunds from United. I list and take the chance basically. Is that correct?

2) Similarly, if I fail to make it out of EWR and give up on my trip am I refunded for the flights I didn't take? (He wasn't sure on that one and was waiting on a reply from a colleague).

Refunded for a flight if you don't take it, but you do not get refunded for the class upgrade if you choose to go on a lower class rather than waiting for another flight if first/biz is full.

I think it used to be that F and Y were the same cost on 2-cabin planes. May have changed after the switchover, though. If the employee wants to be really nice, he could do a payroll deduction instead, and you pay him back. That way the charge would be made AFTER the flight is taken, and at the right charge. This is probably only an option if your friend is an employee of United, not one of the other carriers (SkyWest, GoJet, etc). I know SkyWest stopped doing that. They told us that even UA employees couldn't do payroll deduction anymore (everyone liked that option) but when I started at UA, we could. Not sure if that was always the case or not, though.

Just curious-- my airline you go online to book the buddy pass with myidtravel.com for your friend, and it calculates everything on the spot. Is that not how it works on other carriers?
