Non-rev'g from Australia
If you are non-rev'g on a through flight (MEL-SYD-LAX), if it is the same flight number, could you possibly be bumped from 1st class (if you were lucky enough to get it in Melbourne), when you got to Sydney? Would it be only revenue passengers that could possibly bump you or could a non-rev bump you if they had higher priority when boarding in SYD? Thanks for any info. you can provide!

Hi Sharkwil,
I deleted your other post to keep clutter down. First time in a while that Migflanker didn't beat me to it, but that's another story. Anyway, don't worry about that too much. You're not the first to do that, and I'm sure you won't be the last.
To actually answer your question, as far as I'm aware the thru-flights are basically treated as two separate flights as far as nonrevving is concerned, so there would be no advantage to coming from MEL instead of SYD to LAX.

This is correct. 2 separate flights, each leg must deplane and reboard if cleared..
