Hi, my husband and I are retired DL employees S3b pass riders and want to travel to Johannesburg in early July. At this time,
the flight from ATL-JNB look like it has a lot of seats open. However, I understand they take a huge amount of cargo on board
so many seats are kept open for weight/balance. Does anyone know what the cut off number of seats that can be used.
And, isn't the ATL-JNB a nonstop?
Secondly, we are going to spen 3 days in Capetown. Is there anything that we should not miss? What sights should we
see?
Thank you.
Robert

Hi Robert, you might want to change your "display name" to something less attractive to spammers. http://www.nonrev.net/forums/style_e...DIR#>/wink.gif
Here's how:
1. Go to "My Controls" at the top of a community page in the light blue navigation bar.
2. Scroll down on the resulting page and look in the left hand column for "Personal Profile".
3. Select "Change Display Name" and follow the instructions.

Welcome--happy to add my 2 rands.
I'm not sure when the nonstop ATL/JNB starts--we're taking it in Sept--I guess you'll need to check delta.com for aircraft/schedule change. So I guess if you have the dates, I can give you more accurate info and opinion. The new nonstop will be 777 LR200 with flatbeds!!! Not a bad way to fly 16+ hrs. the DKR stop totals about 22 hrs
There is no specific cut-off for pax numbers--temp and cargo vary so much. Are you flying in JNB and out CPT? The CPT flights are NOT nonstop, so you will have the lovely "time-to-sweat-it-out in Dakar", as in Are they going to bump us off the flight? If you get stuck in DKR, hope they don't want a yellow fever card--Ive never been asked anywhere in the world but I have it in case. DKR is pricey!!
Or are you RT JNB?
Cape Town--I LOVE IT! My husband would love going there more often as captain but ti shifted to ATL base and it's a long rotation for him. I can recommend a car--if you aren't skilled at right road/stick shift--get an automatic. Drive to Cape of Good Hope--its a rather short day trip if you don't stop too much--but you must stop for the Boulders to see the penguin colony (p-u-ey!! but adorable!) One way down on the coast--returning the wine valley way or reverse. Sad to say the Chapman's Peak drive is still closed ) from what I understand) and IF and thats a BIG IF--Table Mountain is clear, it's one my husband's faves--he loves to hike but it's not for the squeamish. The drive is really good--even on the wrong side...You can go to Hermanus and cage dive with the great white sharks--no scuba reqd--it's pretty wild--I have the website he used. and more tips if you want.
I would personally skip CPT waterfront--nothing special at all.
Feel free to ask more--I saved your email if you want me to answer more specifics. Hope that helps a little.
PS--just confirmed that Chapman's Drive is closed until at least August, but if you look at tripadvisor.com Cape Town forum, there is a way to give you partial views (it is ONE SCARY road to drive) so maybe it's best to just go to that tourist access

I jumpseated on DL, ATL-DKR-CPT, and had a wonderful stay in Cape Town. I absolutely loved Boulders Beach with the substantial penguin population. We also went wine-tasting and saw some farms with neat animals like zebras, etc... CPT is a great city with quite a storied past. It's as much a history lesson as it is a vacation. Enjoy!

Lovely little city, isn't it? Boss is taking final NY based trip this weekend. CHapman's Peak Raod is still closed (Oct) but you can go part-way up for the view)
I loved the Boulders and the Penguins!! and we really liked Steenberg Hotel (winery/golfcourse)
Cape Point is fascinating place--kinda like being on the moon....

I am planning a "quick" trip to the Namibian coast & best routing for Zed fares available to me would include ATL/JNB on Delta, or NYC/FRA/JNB on Lufthansa. First choice is, of course, the nonstop, but if there is danger of being stranded without a seat, I'd rather be in Frankfurt than Atlanta. Any comments on space availability at different times of year would be much appreciated.

got to tell you that we just did the ATL/JNB/ATL and there were some retirees buddy pass riders waiting for up to 9 days to get out of JNB
otehrs were lucky and patient and all got out today and in bix class--it's so IFFY
we had plan B for JNB/DXB on emirates EK, AF to CDG and LH to FRA was last resort (23 yrs, using S2)
getting out of ATL is not the problem--but be aware how difficult it can be.
I may have to delete this info shortly, but you should know the scoop--read fast--this msg may self-destruct!
being on zed as WN you are way down the food chain on this route

Many thanks - just the kind of info I needed! Looks like outbound thru Atlanta and return via Frankfurt is best tentative plan #1. Ultimate destination is Swakopmund, going overland from Windhoek... has anyone out there done this?
-
we just encountered several DL emps doing similar via windhoek
they were the ones who didn't get up front yesterday (we left day before) and they were 1989 DOH using high priority
Sorry I didn't get their email to find out more.
The other emps we came in with had to skip a day in CPT and get to JNB due to minor holiday that choked the flights for the wkend
What are your zed options besides LH via FRA?
-
I thought I had covered all options (except ID90, etc.), and doublechecked all carriers with gates at JNB. All except DL and LH were codeshares without zed agreements. Then I checked other African cities and the only other option below Morocco/Egypt seemed to be LX to Kenya. Then, inspired by your question, I started checking the route maps of every "partner" and (alphabetically the last to check, of course) happily found that VS appears to have a flight from London... so there is another option. Thanks again!
