I can't find anything on dlnet that answers your question. Since you're retired, you can call the pass bureau and they should know.

according to an acquaintance who manages a visa/passport processing company,
"Yes you need a transit visa and you can’t leave the airport, if you have to leave the airport or transit more than once I would get an L Tourist visa"
I suppose you have the info about transit visas from the Chinese consular dept?

Hey!
Check the TIMATIC Systems regarding any Visa issues.

Rule of thumb ... anyone traveling on a standby ticket should have all the necessary documents (e.g., visas) to enter any country on his/her itinerary, including all intended transit points. There is no firm guarantee, and no committment from the airline to transport you on a specific flight/date when you're traveling standby. Local authorities at a transit point may require you clear customs and check-in landside upon arrival.
