I can't find anything on dlnet that answers your question. Since you're retired, you can call the pass bureau and they should know.

according to an acquaintance who manages a visa/passport processing company,
"Yes you need a transit visa and you can’t leave the airport, if you have to leave the airport or transit more than once I would get an L Tourist visa"
I suppose you have the info about transit visas from the Chinese consular dept?

Hi--I finally located this info which will apply to us because we will have Skymiles seats to connect to Bali. I see the dilemma about "non-confirmed" seats and my advice from the agent I know is get the L tourist visa. I think you'll see the fines involved

If passenger holds an APEC Business Travel Card:
visa not required, provided back of card states it is valid
for travel to Indonesia.
