I had to laugh about "unknown food"! Hubby's co-pilot says he just goes to a restaurant in Beijing, looks at a picture, grunts, and hopes it edible. I asked my American pilot wife friend who lives there how to say noodles, then all I have to do is cluck, oink or moo and hope the vegetables are automatic.
