How tough is it to fly nonrev on Delta i July to Cairo?
typically going there is not the difficulty
that's pretty hot/off-season--I assume you're not talking about holiday travel?
what re your potential dates and I can ck loads (way too early but I can see what's not avail)
you're dealing w/high temps any of those dates so weight will be an issue. Get your zeds in order for CDG. If you get the zed lows on AF, make sure you have an extra option for maybe AMS on KLM or--we looked at Royal Jordanian thru AMM but that means another overnight and possible wt probs too. Prepare for hotel nr CAI--there is a decent Novotel w/DL discounts via accorhotels.com.
(BTW--Petra is awesome for a "side" trip)
Happy to assist w/other details--we just went this past Jan/Feb.
Keep in mind July 1 is our holiday wkend.
We had hoped to go during the Jul 1 dates becuase we are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, but could probably move it to June 24 - July 3 or July 22 - July 31. Do you have any thoughts? What days do you think are best for departing and returning. Do you think we should forget trying in July becuase of the weight issues?
let me check current status for those dates--it's the return issue when it gets toasty and risky for weight factors
if you can GET there, do you have plan B/C to get BACK?
anniversary?? AWWW That's sweet!
If the loads look really iffy the wk before, plan to give yourself an extra day to get back to AMS or CDG. The Novotel (and others) are right by the airport and relatively cheap/accessible for an overnight.
Are you just planning Cairo or beyond to Luxor/Aswan?
The weight issues are darn near every date, but they do get dicier when it gets hot and cargo rev is more than rev pax.
Do you have the perfect second choice for your anniversary? Just in case?
LOL , , , This is our third choice. Our first choice was Thailand, we had everything booked and planned. Our second choice was Greece and then they started having riots.
We are planning on Cairo. I would love to take a side trip to either Petra, Jerusalem and or the Red Sea for some snorkeling. We had planned on spending 5 days on Ko Tao in Thailand to get some beach and snorkeling time. I haven't gotten too serious about planning becuase I didn;t know if it was wise to try and go in July.
We have never traveled abroad before and wanted to travel to someplace that would be special for the ocasion.
JFK/CAI/JFK
Loads are decent Jul 1-10
Poor June 24 (25th is better not great) RTN Jul 3 is good tho
End July dates look good but that's a long time off
You can access Jordan thru Amm (Jordan is really nice---great people) and still zed to CAI. Petra is glorious!
(BTW--You can access Phuket thru HKG and bypass BKK)
well, I just an email from aeromarinie and the Lorraine Barge (canal cruises) is offering transition July 24 for $600/pax lots of inclsuives...romantic anniversary trip in France--access CDG
we flew into AMM
Our guide was:
Murad "moohwad"
email him seleen4@yahoo.com
mobile 00962 7 960 54 0889
I did the donkey ride up (mild heart condition) as far as possible--we started maiun entry and exited the back hills. It was a very long day trip from the hotel.
This guy and his group work w/DL crews out of the Intercontinental Hotel--many of the otehr major Amman hotels are within walking distance from one another but the city is long way from airport. You pass AMM to get to Petra so pickup there might be a good idea instead of doubling back to city.
You can fly into Cairo, do Egypt with MS zeds,. zed to AMM on (RJ) Royal Jordanian (short flt) see Petra and fly out of AMM to JFK on DL . Just an idea.
There is also a fellow who took some DL crew folks to a Bedouin campout:
Julian
00962-7888-66-420
Have not sued his services
Our co-pilot and wife did the 3 night desert/sea combo and loved it
I really appreciatte your help.
I am sorry to have so many questions.
Are the flights on MS usually okay to get on? Same with RJ? Do you think the flights out of AMM would be less restricted than Cairo?
This is what I am thinking:
JFK - CAI spend 3 days
MS - SSH - Spend 3 days returning to CAI
CAI - AMM Spend 2 days
AMM - JFK
Thanks again for all of your help. I have emailed Murad
I personally would never go to Sharm--partly that I'm not diver/snorkler (he's PADI) but I understand it's gotten so horribly touristy and cheap. Some people refer to it as the land of black socks and sandals, referring to the tourist population. I guess I'd equate that with a US waterpark or amusement park (ack--TUBE tops and hiney cracks!!) from yrs of reading forums on subject. I have not been, tho. I would seriously suggest minimizing CAI, going to Luxor--valley of kings is amazing!! Karnak and Luxor temples--amazing! Nile River--amazing!
It seems like you have so much on your plate when you inject the water sport into what most would deem an historical/cultural trip. If your priority is diving, I'd skip Egypt and go elsewhere but that's MY opinion. If you want to see Egypt and Petra, I'd skip diving.
That's just alot of short hops/early flights for standby. MS should be fairly good to nonrev but it's so cheap to buy tkt on the spot, too, if you can't get on. There are SO many flts/day.
I think AMM is better for RTN to JFK at times, but I haven't monitored recently.
Just some food for thought. Keep the questions coming and I'll try to find answers. Hope everyone is getting something out of this thread!

LOL This is the comment that made us put any thoughts of Sharm out of our heads!
We had points to use at Luxor--Sheraton, but we started at the Novotel Pavillion for one night (Accor discounts can be as much as 75% off) I would go thru the travelnet link for resx.com (you have to register and it's not the most user-friendly) to get ideas of prices and they show Nile cruises, too. We also use ASU Guide and you pay for that--monthly or annually.
Our Cairo guide, Abdo was great--like having a pal w/car. Great driver! Tell him you're airline and I sent you.
Cairo hotels--can't really help becuase we had teh Heliopolis Fairmont I bought at auction year prior--OMG--it was a HUGE suite w/bells and whistles but really close to CAI so the trip to Giza etc was long! Abdo is from Fayoum--that could be a major cool side trip from Cairo because they just found 57 tombs (in May). Abdo is a student so he doesn't charge like the official guides YET.
Amman--hmmm--I'd rely on Murad for Petra hotels--or Julian for the Bedouin camp. We had to go from AMM to city (45 mins) to Intercontinental Hotel then back to get to Petra. Petra Town is a dump, there is one interesting sounding place--let me figure out what the name of the hotel is--it's not in my travel files for Jordan.
I woudl start sorting thru the tripadvisor forums, too--just be cautious about touts in any of the Egypt forums--so irritating.
We are making our plans to go to CAI. I am going to purchase ZED tickets on RJ and MS to go through AMM if we need to. When it get's closer do you know of anyway to check the loads on either of these airlines?
It looks like their rules for carry ons include weight restrictions. Have you flown on RJ or MS and had any issues with your carryon. We weren't going to check any bags if we can help it?
Thanks for all your help.
I didn't forget you; just busy with stuff today--Boss heads off for a short one in the AM--I will explore some of my sources and take a peek tomorrow
Look at Interline travel links on travelnet and plug in your LXR/ CAI choices--there are plenty of flights all day long--we bought individual one way tkts (easier to refund but stinkers to book--mention to tkt agent it's min fare and may it will save them some time) ID95's take alot of time compared to zeds.
There is a trial offer on the ASU guide site but you can get a month sub to try the new flgith check (I haven't yet because I used Iddeals)
We also called Egyptair local offices and asked about pass seating. They were quite helpful--particualrly in Luxor.
Lxuor:
Genesis Pub!!! We loved it--run by Julie (she has a pool, a camel and a horse on premises) Great food--near the Hilton--north Luxor--maybe you can get the travel deal??
REsx has oodles of hotel deals too
Luxor Temple and Luxor Museum are outstanding--you don't need a guide but eh temple is better appreciated w/one
I'd skip Sound and Light Shows--I thinkt hey are major hokey and tres French on production/drama and $$
There are some restaurants on the water--you juts hvae to root around below the Corniche to find them
If you can do a cruise, skip the felucca line-up and hire one on your own.
What else did you want to know? I'm sure the questions change from day to day.
Sharm has become a tourist Mecca for package holiday makers from Europe.
In fact, some of the hotels are geared towards certain markets : Italians one brigade, German another, Brits etc. It is known in airline speak as ' Poor Mans Dubai '. We're snobs, but isn't any part of the world sacred from second hand car salesmen^_^
By North American standards, I guess the easiest comparison would be Cancun. Beach, cheap drinks and historical sites close by, if you're that way inclined.
In a way, a shame. It was, for many many years, the area where Egyptians from Metropolitan cities took their vacation. Clearly, some folk recognised it's potential and voila' .... so popular is it now, once the domain of charter flights, BA now have a scheduled non stop.
St Catherine's Monestary would be the main attraction you would miss - a shame.
What a great description! Poor Man's Dubai! what a chuckle! and it is a shame to see what was once a class act, drop to popular attraction
Some places you have to visit before they get polluted by yahoos!
Hi Mrs767er
I have been trying to watch the loads on Travel Net. It looks like the JFK to CAI flight last night left with no non revs and had 37 seats open. Am I reading the Travel Net sight correctly?
Travel Net confuses me a little becuase the seats available on the first screen are usually very different from the seat showing on the airport standby list screen.
We can't decide whether to try and go through AMM or CDG as a backup plan. I think I should purchase ZED tickets on RJ and MS and AF to go through AMM or CDG if we need to. Should I purchase them in SLC before we leave or can I purchase them in AMM or CDG?
It looks like their rules for carry ons include weight restrictions. Have you flown on RJ or MS and had any issues with your carryon. We weren't going to check any bags if we can help it?
Thanks for all your help.
tbrown, I believe M767 is off paragliding *wink* in Peru, hopefully someone else from Delta will step up and help with loads.
I just got back and can gelp sort out #s
exact date choices?
I hope you had a fantastic time.
We can leave JFK anytime starting Thursday June 24. We want to arive in Cairo by Saturday June 26.
We are flying SLC - JFK.
I wasn't too worried until they canceled last nights flight and the night before it looks like they had a bunch of seats open but left without any non revs. No I'm thinking we may have a big problem getting to Cairo.
Any suggestions would as always be greatly appreciated.
no idea why canceled
I would opt for 23rd to CAI
AMM flight on 23rd has nothing but buddy pass riders
travelnet has had some major issues last few days
Hi,
We can't fly on the 23rd, husband has to work that night. Lots of questions.
Is there anyway to look at the # of standby's on the Air France flights without listing?
Is the ranking that Air France gives you, your place on the list? If they rank us 3 and we have 3 passengers, would we be 3,4,5?
If we purchased a ZED on Air France, should we purchase 2 seperate segments JFK - CDG and then CDG to CAI, or one JFK - CAI?
If the JFK - CDG arrives at 12:30 and the CDG - CAI leaves at 13:35 does that give us enough time? Do we have to recheck in when we get to CDG?
If we purchase the ZED, and can't get on a flight do they let us relist for another flight? Can we relist and change the city pairs like the ticket reads CDG - CAI, we don't make the flight can we try and go CDG - AMM on the same ticket?
Does Air France only let you fly economy even if they have First Class seats available?
I can't find detail on the dress code for Air France, it says business casual, but I can't find any details.
We are taking 1 carry on each and then a small backpack each (No Purse and one of the backpacks has our laptop and camera. Do you think that would be okay?
If we have to overnight in CDG, do you know if there is a crew hotel?
Thanks for all your help.
Tina
I cna answer most of those tomorrow AM. no crew hotel--but great deals using Accorhotels (does anyone use that?) off to bed--I'm whipped after NOT getting to LIMA for 3 days due to storm delays
Hi mrs767er,
Sorry it took me so long but I wanted to let you know how things went.
We looked at all of the loads on the 23rd and they all looked oversold to CAI and AMN. We went to bedthat nigt without a clue what we were going to try but figured we would go SLC - JFK and then figure out something. Before we left SLC, my hisband had me check JFK - FRA and wouldn;t you know it, it looked great. We flew SLC - JFK. Stopped in JFK to purchase ZED fares for Air France and Luthansa. Ran to te gate and boarded a Delta flight JFK - FRA - got business class for all 3 of us.
Landed in FRA went to the ticket counters and used a ZED to fly Lathansa to CAI. Got on the first flight and landed in Cairo.
We had a spectacular time in CAI and we are glad that we went when we did given the turmoil that happened later in the year. We saw Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria. Took a cruise, and yes we took an overnight train! This trip had us on car, van, cruise ship, plane, train, sand camel.
Going home on July 3, we were prepared for the weight restrictions. Bought a ZED for Air France. The Delta flight left with 30 seats because of weight restrictions, other standbys had been waiting for days to get out. Because you had prepared us, the minute we missed the flight, weran to the Air France flight and were just able to check in. We got on the flight to CDG - coach.
From CDG we flew
CDG - PHL = Business Class
PHL - DFW - Business Class
DTW - SLC - Coach
Flights were booked solid and people had been waiting for days but we got out of Paris with this routing. It was a long day but we got home on July 4 in tiime for fireworks. Thanks for helping us and teaching me to have multiple plans.
We had our "trip of a lifetime".
Dare I try SLC - OOG mid July!
Even with the recent turmoil in Egypt this country is high on my list of countries to visit. Were the LH or AF flights tricky to make? I know LH uses/used widebody equipemnt into CAI but I am assuming these usually go full of connecting pax from North America and Europe. Now that only EgyptAir flies nonstop between North America and Egypt I'm sure it's even harder to make one of the flights from Euopre.
Regards,
Chepos
we took AF to CDG and then connected with DL via ATL there (due to weather in JFK)
It was a great Plan B.
It's a great destination--avoid ALL Uk connectins as many Brits vacay long term in Sharm Al Sheik and and frequent Luxor.
