How about MSP? From the airport, you can take a light rail train to the Mall of America on one end, downtown Minneapolis on the other. Neat city worth exploring, and that train is CHEAP: under $3 for a 2.5 hour ticket. If you can make multiple trips during that time, or even make a full round trip, more power to you. Just be sure you're off that train before your time expires.

Also, if you can get to DEN, I'll show you around sometime. I know a nice hotel in the Stapleton area with a free airport shuttle and great discounts for airline employees (I know UA, at least. They have a few airlines coming in and out of that place).

Some places have pretty consistent patterns, but just about everywhere has exceptions at some time or another. There are also some seasons that are better than others. Between Spring Break and Memorial Day, or between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. I think you can also get lucky between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Summer travel season is a pretty big one, so don't get heartbroken right away. Do you have access to US Airways flights yet, or just AA? My experience with US has been that they'll be more likely to have space.
