Vodka and Ton With Lime? BYO..

Airline passengers might notice something missing from their vodka tonics: the lime. A spike in the price of limes has caused some airlines — for now — to stop offering the fruit.


‘‘We temporarily pulled limes about two weeks ago, due to skyrocketing lime prices,’’ said Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Halley Knigge. The airline typically goes through about 900 limes a day.
Growers in the Mexico have reduced their supply because of unrest caused by drug cartels and flooding from heavy rains. That, combined with drought in California and a growing demand for limes, has driven up prices to a three-year high.


The average advertised price in US supermarkets was 56 cents last week, according to the Department of Agriculture — up from 37 cents the week ended March 28 and 31 cents a year ago.
United Airlines has had to make do with lemons on some flights.
‘‘We still serve limes, though they’re more difficult to source,’’ spokesman Rahsaan Johnson said.
For frequent fliers like Ben Schlappig, author of the travel blog One Mile at a Time, that won’t cut it. ‘‘There are lots of cocktails where lemon simply isn’t a substitute for lime,’’ he said.
One of its largest caters told United it has 15 to 20 percent of the typical lime inventory. The airline expects to have a normal supply by late May.

I got the news a few wks ago in a Mexico forum--good thing I prefer lemon in most of my beverages--particularly V/T. Can't imagine what a lemorita would taste like tho...

I love limes better than lemons. Funny, in Mexico, they call it backwards. LIMON is what we call a LIME and LIMA is what they call a LEMON. I Mexico, they kind of like the LEMON better than the LIME. I like the bitter flavor of lime. I squeeze them into a coke or a beer. I use them to clean my fingers and hands after eating seafood. It really neutralizes the fishy flavor. I use them for hicups. I use them in tea. I use them in Mexican food on the chips and salsa, use them on tortilla soup. Nothing like a nice bag of limes. In Mexico, they sell for very cheap. They are abundunt in the trees. In fact, I've seen lime trees growing in the wild on Central American beaches. I've picked lime trees. I think LIMES are definately one of earths great deals. Lot of bang for the penny or two. (In Mexico but who knows what they go for lately?) If you ever go to CANCUN or anywhere in the Yucatan, be sure to order a SOPA DE LIMA. To me, its just a tortilla soup really, but they like to throw a slice of LEMON (Not lime) in the middle of the soup. For me, I'll just squeeze a half lime and throw the squeezed portion in the soup. There is nothing like a LIME.

Here are some interesting facts. LIME JUICE neutralizes corrosion on Nicad batteries and used to clean those. (Aviation batteries.) Ever get a cut, pour some corona with lime over your cut if you happen to be out. Lime citric acid can kill fungus.

Fantastic 29! I was checking my terminals on my battery the other day and I lost my steel brush. I will get the lime and a toothbrush and wipe clean..

Remember, I said NICAD batteries for lime juice. Here is how to clean your CAR batteries from corrosion which is composed of different properties than that of a NICAD. Take a cup or bucket, mix BAKING SODA with water. Say about 3 to 1 or so. Not too heavy but it can't hurt if you overdo it with baking soda. Pull both battery terminals off then, mix it together (Baking soda and water) and just pour it on your battery. I like to take the terminals off the batteries, both positive and negative, pull the battery out, and throw the baking soda with water mixture on the battery rack, because if your battery is corroding at the terminals, chances are some of the corrosion has seaped down into the battery rack. So clean all evidence of corrosion with backing soda, wipe off with towels or rags, and pour clean water to wash away the baking soda that by now, since interacting with the corrosion has created a foamy dirty look. Just wash it or wipe it away. Clean your battery terminals too with baking soda, and then take a brush to clean the part that makes contact to the battery, for a clean connection. (Battery post terminal lug brush cleaners). Then put some kind of protectant on your terminal lugs after you install them. Some grease, or vaseline works too. You can use cola for cleaning corrosion too, or COKE but I prefer baking soda. Coke is sweet, can attract a bunch of ants here in SE Texas. The ones that bite.
