I am going to be going to Oahu next summer and I need to find a place to stay on the north east side of Oahu. Does anyone know of anything there. If I cant find anything I will just stay at Hilton Turtle Bay. but I prefer to find something a bit cheaper. I will be needing two seperate condos because we are taking our friends and they have 5 kids that will be going.
Thanks,

Hilton Turtlehead??? I'm not sure what that is? By northeast do you mean the windward side? If so there's not much. The windward side is primarily for locals and natives (except Kaneohe) - even though its the best side of Oahu. I have inlaws that live on the windward side. Give me some more details and maybe I can be of some help.

This may be more west than you're looking for, but there are a couple of places west of the Hilton near the Bonzai Pipeline that we found. We stayed at <a href="http://backpackers-hawaii.com/" target="_blank">http://backpackers-hawaii.com/</A> They had a range of different types of accomodations from dorm type to having your own cabin, reasonable prices. We loved this place and every night there was an all you can eat feast for about $8pp (bbq chicken night, luau night, etc.), good food too. East of there was a place called Shark's Cove <a href="http://www.hostels.com/sharkscove/" target="_blank">http://www.hostels.com/sharkscove/</A> which is also a hostel with private cabins etc.
Also when finding these links came across this vacation rental: <a href="http://www.greatvacationhomes.com/rentals/4302.html" target="_blank">http://www.greatvacationhomes.com/rentals/4302.html</A> and this one: <a href="http://hawaii-scuba.com/accommodation.html" target="_blank">http://hawaii-scuba.com/accommodation.html</A>

What was I thinking.. I know it's not Turtlehead.. It is Turtle Bay Hilton.. I dont know where we will be staying but I think we are looking for a semi upscale place, just a reasonable price. something around $75.00 a night would be great.

I think you may need to look into private rentals, there are not a lot of options on the North Shore.

...and of course I should've recognized Turtle. You've found a great place (if you can get a good rate). There's not much touristy on the North Shore with good reason. While the state depends heavily on tourism they want to keep Oahu's damn, pesky tourists in their place! ie. Waikiki. The ugly urban sprawl was planned that way to keep you out of the local's hair as much as possible.
Like Meg, I too would recommend a house or condo on the North Shore. There are lots to choose from but they are far from cheap - generally $200-$500 per night for an average place. If you're willing to splurge I can give you some links. If 2 or 3 couples are travelling together you can split the cost and make it affordable.

I would love to hear of some places. I am going with a friend and his wife and kids. Of coarse I will have my wife and kids as well. It will be a big group and we are all very close. So yea, I would love that link.
Thanks,

Here's a few links.
<a href="http://www.islandrentals.net/" target="_blank">http://www.islandrentals.net/</A>
<a href="http://www.sunsethomes.net/" target="_blank">http://www.sunsethomes.net/</A>
<a href="http://www.sandsea.com/" target="_blank">http://www.sandsea.com/</A>
<a href="http://www.firsthawaiianvacation.com/home.htm" target="_blank">http://www.firsthawaiianvacation.com/home.htm</A>
These should get you started. Most of them are realtors who rent out these places for their owners. Don't worry there's no time-share or other presentation. They just take a commission out of your rental price for their work.
You also might try www.asuguide.com it seems that they had some private condos on various islands at one time. I haven't checked them in a while.
Good luck, if you need more links I have them.

Thanks Randy, i will look into those.. One of them might work for our needs and that would be a big help.. I still am thinking about turtle bay but I was told it is a bit of a hike to the beach, and I want to be right on a beach for the kids. We still have lots of time so I think by getting a good head start I will find something that will work..
Thnaks again,

This is a great site to find a place at, Evan. www.vrbo.com We rented a place on Ewa Beach that had plenty of room for our family of nine....in fact, we had two to choose from. Since you are travelling with friends and their kids, you might check this one out. <a href="http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Farm/6719/kahakai.htm" target="_blank">http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Farm/6719/kahakai.htm</A> It's right on the beach, and they have different quarters, too, that would be available for both your families to be 'together', yet 'separate'. The couple who rents them are wonderful! We stayed down the road from here, in this same local neighborhood, and felt completely comfortable and safe. We left the upstairs lanai doors open the entire 2 wks. that we were there in Dec. 2001.
Hope some of this info helps~

I will have to look into these.. There are so many different places to look at. I just hope to find a good place for our group.

Update on my trip.. I am still planning on going next summer and now it looks like we have decided to go to Lanikai Oahu. I have heard a lot of people and reports that it is the best part of Oahu. So now I just need to find accomidations there.. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Personally I think the windward side is the best and Lanikai is great. There are no hotels or resorts anywhere in the area, Lanikai is a residential area. The only thing you can do is rent a vacation home. Check out the sites I listed in this thread a few months ago for possible suggestions. If you can't find anything I will try to make some inquiries.
If you do find something you will need to rent a car at HNL and drive there. You'll also need it for meals as the only restaurants are in neighboring Kailua. There are no shops, businesses or stores of any kind in Lanikai but there are several nice places to eat (and fast food) as well as a Safeway in Kailua.

I agree, we stayed on that side as well (in Kailua? I can't remember). It was very relaxing, the beach was beautiful, fine, white sand.
My only regret is spending an afternoon at Haunauma (sp?) Bay. Recommended by many, but highly disappointing, crowded, beach not that nice, if you want to snorkel there must be other places that are way nicer. Just my opinion...

Thanks for the info, I think we will love that side of Oahu as well. I have been to Haunama Bay myself and to be honest, we didnt care for it either. The fish were to aggresive and the beach is way over crowded.
Randy, I will keep checking on those house rentals and I hope to find something. Keep in mind, I am trying to accomodate 4 adults and 7 children. I will most likely have to rent two places. I am just hoping to get them close to each other.
Thanks guys,

If you find a house to rent, ask the owner or management co. if the neighbors home is also for rent. Most rental owners know which other homes in the area are rentals. This way you will get 2 homes in the same area.Possibly next door to each other. (my suggestion is go directly thru the owners, much better rates).
I have a rental home near Disneyworld, and I frequently get asked for 2 homes.
By the way, you will love staying in a home rather than a hotel. As I say your don't live in 1 room at home, why should you stay in 1 room on vacation.

Another thought...
As you're looking for properties include Kailua beach as well. It's the connecting beach just to the west and very nice. Kailua beach also has a park with bathroom and rinse facilities and a large green for picnics.

Aggressive fish? Overcrowded beach? Coincidence? I think not!

Mig, you don't miss a thing, do you?
Since you left us hanging, I'm dying to hear your conspiracy theory on that one...

Meg what can I say, once Evan mentioned aggressive fish, I knew everybody sunning on the beach wasn't too far behind.
Of course this whole thing about an island, the summer tourist season, aggressive fish and a crowded beach does sound verrrrry familiar.

I just spent 3 night on Oahu(Sept 23-26) at the Marriott Waikiki($109/nt+$10/parking+$11/tax). With 10,000 visitor a day we skipped Hanaua Bay, but found Kahana Bay and Kualoa Beach EMPTY both are on the windward side also hiked from the parking lot out to Ka'ena Point again no one but us and a mongoose.

It now looks like I will be just going with my Family and not our Friends... They just found out she is Pregnant and wont be able to go when we planned so we are just going with out them.. This will make accomidations much easier as it is just two adults and two kids.. We will just get us a house rental on the windward side. (Lanikai)
Thanks agian for all the info..
