First off, I'm of the mindset that non-revs get the best seat in the house whenever available (that's how I did it when I was the gate agent @ US!), but I have to agree with the other poster that you should buy the Y and then pay the upgrade if it becomes available. You can buy the upgrade at the ticket counter and if you don't use it (Internationally), you can just refund it. Domestically, it's non-refundable, but most agents will sell them to you at the gate (if applicable) so you don't have to buy in advance.
If you buy the C and it's not available, the agent has no way to refund it down to Y for you. I would think any agent would give you F if one was open, unless there were not enough meals available there....in which case you go to Y (I know...I'd still rather sit in F with no meal, but the Flight Attendants won't have it because it's awkward for them and upsets their service.)
I've had good experiences and bad experiences with agents and airlines all over the world...I'm convinced it is usually the agent's demeanor that will affect where you sit on the plane. Not much you can do about it but be glad you get from point A to point B....it's the joy/pain of non-reving![/b]
So let me get this straight, if I have a Y class ZED, I can ask to pay an upgrade fee to get into J or F? Is this only at usairways or other airlines as well?
