Hi to all!!

Just wondering what is going wrong. I am a LH employee, and our company has a ZED agreement with US as follows:
SYSTEM WIDE: C/Y status R2 standby. This is of course reciprocal for US on LH. In as much as we have the exact agreement with UA, I was wondering why that C-Class ZED ticket does not afford us ride in the First domestic cabin. (Full fare C class have the privilege of transfers etc,,, in F cabins in the domestic sectors of their trips). If I purchase a UA C-Class ZED domestically I am always on the list as thus, and if it is a 2-Cabin aircraft, always in First. Kinda wanna know why you folks have twice taken my ticket with space available in F and put me in Y- Major problem with the whole thing is, LH will not refund us the fare paid vs. class flown if the difference is =< EUR12.00. Please tell me your points of view.
P.S. LH and most European carriers have only C-Class within Europe which is mostly above even US coast to coast standards.

Comments Welcome!

Dont know why do they do that, but I would rather have two ZED tickets, one in C and other in Y. when they clear you, ask the agent if it is a seat in economy class (if it is not shown at the boarding pass), and give them the ZED in the correct class.
I suppose that happen because of the domestic free upgrades for elite pax... dont really know if USAIR does it, but delta does, and it is hard to get a seat in J or F when flying domestic.

LH419 ..... I would say that the UA/LH relationship is such that this facility is afforded to LH staff.

However, I completely disagree with your comments regarding service. I recently flew C class BEY/FRA and it was the same seat configuration as LHR/FRA !
Had I known I would have flown on BD with a FULL c class service.

Not sure which sectors you have flown in F class on UA, but di disgaree with a like/like intra European flights ... what am I saying?! BEY is not Europe yet afforded the same configuration and seats !

When non-revving on US, it's easiest to just get a Y class zed and purchase an upgrade coupon at the airport if F is available when they are about to clear the list. It's $20 for North America, the Caribbean, and Central America. Transatlantic is $100. Domestic upgrades are non-refundable, but transatlantic is refundable. Both are transferrable. You will occasionally find some agents who will just clear you to F or C, but they aren't terribly common.

It's not too common to get F on domestic routes, except maybe the shuttle or some off-peak hub flights. You never know, though! Don't be ashamed to ask.

First off, I'm of the mindset that non-revs get the best seat in the house whenever available (that's how I did it when I was the gate agent @ US!), but I have to agree with the other poster that you should buy the Y and then pay the upgrade if it becomes available. You can buy the upgrade at the ticket counter and if you don't use it (Internationally), you can just refund it. Domestically, it's non-refundable, but most agents will sell them to you at the gate (if applicable) so you don't have to buy in advance.
If you buy the C and it's not available, the agent has no way to refund it down to Y for you. I would think any agent would give you F if one was open, unless there were not enough meals available there....in which case you go to Y (I know...I'd still rather sit in F with no meal, but the Flight Attendants won't have it because it's awkward for them and upsets their service.)
I've had good experiences and bad experiences with agents and airlines all over the world...I'm convinced it is usually the agent's demeanor that will affect where you sit on the plane. Not much you can do about it but be glad you get from point A to point B....it's the joy/pain of non-reving!

So let me get this straight, if I have a Y class ZED, I can ask to pay an upgrade fee to get into J or F? Is this only at usairways or other airlines as well?

I'd never heard of such a thing, but I gather it works in same fashion as a rev pax buying one. So one gets a coupon at check in and then can try and use it at the podium?

Interesting. I was told by US head office that these upgrade vouchers are for US staff travel on US and not intended for interline guests. Maybe this is another case of policy not keeping up with practice.

Yes very interesting! I know we can't do that with CX at all, the whole upgrade coupon concept would fly in the face of our service style. We can upgrade our FOC ticket with Asia Miles, but there is nowhere in my town to earn Asia Miles so that doesn't really work.

I looked up DLs upgrade coupon costs (only one that really interests me for the SYDLAX) but it said it only does Caribbean/Sth America and US upgrade coupons. Don't know what UA are flogging

AA Zed is correct. Interline passengers non-revving on US are not supposed to be eligible to purchase the non-rev upgrades. Those are only for US staff and their eligibles and even guest passes.

North American carriers operate very differently to others. Generally, from experience and a wide circle of friends who work for airlines, North American carriers
afford their employees more generous facilities when flying on our own carrier.
In my 25 years I've yet to seat anywhere but Y on a South Asia carrier - others may have been more fortunate.
Upgrades for a set fee are offered to revenue passengers on UA depending on loads. You cannot purchase such an upgrade if you are holding an ID ticket.
You will not find an upgrade for an international service for $100 U.S.
