Hey all, looking to take a day trip with a friend from work and looking at MSY flights look great going and coming, shocking for CVG. Any good tips on MSY? Does anyone know if there is a metro bus/train we can take from the airport to downtown? Thanks for the help.

car might be cheaper than shuttle!

Far cheaper to split the cab with a friend to get to the quarter!
Heaps to see on a day trip, look inside the church, wander around antique shops, have a po boy, have a that drink... huricane?cafe du monde, bourbon st etc. I've been on several day trips and get bored after 5hrs mind you. I want to do an overnight one time so I can hit Bourbon st for real

Although I've never taken the airport shuttle, I think M767 has a good idea, taking the shuttle into the Quarter seems like the way to go.
Now it's time to eat-
Like Nick said, first stop Cafe du Monde for beignets and chicory coffee, just don't wear black. Then explore Jackson Square, (it's right across the street) and visit St Louis Cathedral. Then hit the shops in the Quarter, as Nick said there are lots of antique shops, but I like the voodoo and hot sauce shops. The Quarter is not all that big, so you'll have time to take in some music and don't forget to get a hurricane at Pat O'Brien's -they say Pat invented the drink, but who knows.
You can also walk over to Canal St and catch the street car, it passes through the Garden Distict. (must have exact fare) New Orleans Streetcars
Pralines--There are lots of places selling pralines down there. But I like Southern Candymakers 334 Decatur St., on the edge of the Quarter.

Food-
K-Paul's 416 Charles St. in the Quarter is good. But there are a lot of tourtists, and I think it's a little expensive.
I love Ralph & Kacoo's 519 Toulouse St, near the riverboat landing. (crawfish etoufee-MMMMM) Eat there everytime I visit.

I plan my trips to N.O. with the efficiency of a kid opening his presents at Christmas. I check loads for weeks before the trip. Carefully check weather forecasts (trust me, if there's a thunderstorm within a 100 miles of Dallas, there is a ground hold in MSY). I have back-ups MSY/ORD/LAX- MSY/STL/LAX- MSY/DFW/anywhere in the entire US including HNL/LAX and still there is a 50/50 chance, I'll end up spending an extra night in N.O. or watching flights out of my connection city.http://bestsmileys.com/frustrated/7.gif

Last time I went I took my mother and two of my friends from WN. We'd been there several times but it was my mothers first time, so she decided to join a walking tour. We're kicking back with a few Hurricanes and lo and behold it starts raining rain like I have never seen before.
She gets back and is drenched, and my bag is drenched. Inside my camera is drenched.

Hmmm I didn't think it would be that bad. In a bind I could nonrev out on WN, but that'd waste half a buddy pass. Is DFWSAT usually much better? Don't know if we will even bother, I have a lot to get done in the big d as it is

Regarding the E2 bus...if money is no object, then a cab is fastest and only a few more dollars than the shuttle (when split between two people). But I'm a bit proponent of public transportation AND money IS an object, so I utilized the bus there recently. If you are traveling on a weekend day or holiday, I would advise against the bus, as it only goes to Poydras and Carrollton, which is not really near the french quarter, and, as we drove by, seemed moderately sketchy.
However, if you are traveling on weekdays during normal hours, the bus goes further down Poydras which is literally 3-4 blocks away from the French Quarter (about a 10-min walk to bourbon street), and a safe, populated area. (And it is only $1.60 each way) BUT, be sure to check the bus schedule first. There's a link to it from the MSY website. And I do think MSY is best and truly fully experienced overnight. I wouldn't even consider doing it as a day-trip.
