I find the best apartment hotels through Craigslist Buenos Aires. Most of the renters are Americans stateside with people in BA to manage the space. I took my parents in February and said in the heart of downtown for about $500 for a week for a two bedroom apartment. If you're looking for a studio or 1 br, the prices can get really reasonable.
The first day there, we took a day tour to get an idea of where we wanted to spend the most time. Definitely check out: Recoleta Cemetery, La Boca, Florida St. (if you're a shopper), the Pink House. Most places are fairly walkable.
My favorite places to eat (forgive me if I mangle the names): El Establo in downtown, Campo de Estilo in Puerto Madera, Montana Ranch in Recoleta.
My favorite tango show is at Cafe Tortoni rather than the big splashy ones.
I know UAL loads to EZE during the holidays suck. I've gone in September and February and gotten first or business both ways.

Thanks for the report, we were in EZE 2 years ago and will go back again and this time take the boat over to Montevideo.

Well, all this discussion about Buenos Aires has got me in the mood for a steak.
Sunday 6/22 DL 101, and Monday 6/23 DL 110 both have seats. I think I'll try to occupy one.
Should anybody else be interested, throw it on here or PM me.
Everthing is Bueno in Buenos Aires!

I might have but sis and I have decided on Guatemala--cheap car, Lake Atitlan and away we go....I fI had just spent 20+ hours in a metal tube to Cape Town, it would have been an option.

I'm looking at a mid January trip myself - are there any tips/back up plan advice folks have? I'll be riding Delta metal for what will probably be the first time and grabbing a generic ZED ticket as a back up, just in case...

there's new DL service starting Dec via jfk in case the atl flights look iffy
Hubby and I are thinking of going first time when he gets a chance to bid for dec or jan.

I've looked at some apts to rent via tripadvisor members

Jumper--did you go already?? Anyone else lately??
We're looking at 6-10th and a great deal at Alvear Palace($225/night premier room: jacuzzi, bfast, taxes, 1 dinner, 1 wine tasting, gym/spa access, champagne arr, butler....) We are still considering doing cheap, but this is kinda once/lifetime--we can always come back for some charm like Miravida Soho or one of those Park Plaza properties if they discount. This has the 21% fee included which is a big chunk.
I'm too spoiled/old to really cheap it. I have to cut/paste lots of old info here--can't wait for you to add more new stuff!

Thought I'd answer myself and add this:
Jamsuites Hotel $75-$150
1551 Palermo (owned by same people small--5 bl;aocks apart) $80-1200 (pool)
Artsuites $130
Bobo--$150-$200+
MiraVida
Cocker
Rooney's
all in similar pricing
all discount for cash payments
one of the nicest BB was 1890 Hotel but odd dodgy hood at night
OK--who had the fabulous steak and where was it?? Fess up--we leave in a few days!
