Distinguishing landmarks.

Oahu's "Diamond Head" is quite noticeable, very interesting place. You can see it all along Waikiki beach and beyond. Old paintings always depicts early islanders at sea with Diamond Head in the back drop. Guam's "Two Lover's Leap" kind of looks like a slide going into the water but the slide is totally vertical. I could see this feature at sea all the time and you can see it in Tumon Bay and from even the airport. Rota's "Wedding cake mountain" is another feature on this island that sticks out like a sore thumb. It's distinguishing shape gets it that name obviously, and pilots know all about wedding cake mountain.

Anyone know of any good distinguishing natural landmarks?

One thing I love about DEN is that you can basically never get lost in the daytime, at least not downtown (streets go diagonal, and buildings make visibility difficult). Reason being, the directions here are towards mountains (west), away from the mountains, mountains on your left, and mountains on your right. They also help make one hell of a climate, and give you something to look at out your window.

Although I've never been there, Gibraltar would fit the bill.

Now to what Brian’s not telling you.
While it may be impossible to get lost in Denver, it's definitely easy to get a ticket.
The streets downtown are all one-way, and as Brian said, all directions are in terms of the mountains - and trust me, ‘going toward the mountains’ gets you on one of those one way streets, where it‘s impossible to talk your way out of a ticket. ( I don't think they like Californians)
I ’d also like to point out that the coin operated telescopes at Buffalo Bill’s Museum & Grave don’t work and don’t give refunds.

Awww, I think I need to give you a tour so you can get a better impression of this area. So far I've had no run-ins with the cops, and while there are quite a few (not all) one-way streets downtown, they alternate direction. If you want to turn left, but can only turn right, just go to the next block and make that left turn. It's funny, I'm now actually a lot more comfortable driving in downtown Denver than I am downtown Minneapolis, and I lived in MSP for years!

I thought of Gibraltar too, I've seen it a few times, even have a picture of it, but though the rock is definately distinguishable, IT IS GIBRALTAR! Gibraltar is the rock itself. Ok, so you can distinguish Gibraltar from the Atlantic ocean and the entrance to the Med. But its not really like Oahu, Diamond Head or Table Mountain like South Africa. If you look at Diamond head from the sea, you know you are in Oahu, Hawaii. If you see the rock of Gibraltar, you know you are viewing Gibraltar. You aren't viewing a rock with a different name attached to a country. The ROCK IS GIBRALTAR if you might know what I may be trying to mean here. But yea....we'll take it just because it is distinguishable in its own right.

I tried to click that picture to enlarge it but I got your profile page instead. My pictures of Gibraltar were not very close pics at all. In fact, it was from a distance but you can make it out.

What about Mount Fuji? Japan. How about Niagra Falls to distinguish Canada and New York USA? How about Phoenix AZ Camel back mountain? Santa Fe, NM... Sangre de Cristo Mountains. These are features you may look at and have a good estimate of where you might be. Say you dropped off from the sky or something in the middle of the night in a parachute, and suddenly you see these distinguishable features. In Managua, you may see MOMOTOMBO volcano, along with others, and you may see, or like San Salvador, Volcano de San Salvador. But some features obviously stick out more than others, like a slam dunk feature, like once you see it, you know its in this or that country. Example.....Niagra Falls.....slam dunk!!!

I dont think the CHP likes Coloradans either. My last run in w/ them was w/ a Colorado plated rental car......but seriously, how can one keep to the speed limit on those long desert roads??

Certainly a different situation, but once in ATL when my GPS broke, I navigated by the airplanes over my head, as I knew they were landing the 27s that day..

I’m with you on that, nice long stretches of highway just begging you to put pedal to the metal. Luckily Sgt keeps license and badge in the same wallet - CHP does extent the courtesy. :rolleyes:
And then there’s the Eisenhower Tunnel, which you definitely don’t want to go through on a week-end during ski season. Trust me, I never saw so many cameras sticking out of sun-roofs in my life- and they’re in a tunnel!
I’ve heard that Coloradans hold their breath while going through the tunnel. (Well Brian?) Obviously they know the off peak hours.

ColoAvs: On the other hand, I don't see nearly as many speed traps here as I do in the midwest. Then again, my experience is mostly a few runs on I-76 to the Nebraska border and a round trip to Glenwood Springs. And that's awesome that you were able to navigate from the planes like that. Personally, I'd use the sun as a backup :-P

Mig: Just say when and food preferences. I know an awesome (and cheap!) Mexican place around here that seems to be pretty well-received when I take guests there. Or beer made from bull testicles. Or both. And I have no idea if holding your breath through the tunnels is common. I suppose I vaguely remember something for tunnels in general in Minnesota, but I'm not yet used to all the quirks out here. That said, it's only a few hours where traffic is really bad from what I hear. Go a few hours earlier or later, and you're generally ok. I'll actually be skiing for the first time on Saturday, though I have been to Breckenridge several Saturdays ago for a snow sculpture competition.

How can you be in Gibraltar and not have monkey's around eh?
