Any advice on getting from Europe to Almaty?

I can travel on Delta to either AMS or FRA and then ID9x on KLM or Lufthansa to Almaty (ALA).

Are there other connection points that I should consider? I hear the layover is Moscow is really long and visas are hard to obtain.
