Our tour to Egypt was not arranged to our liking. Would it be safe to just arrive with reservations at the HIlton and try to get our own NIle cruise? Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks

Do you want to see the sights of Egypt or do you specifically want a cruise? I ask this as on the cruise you are restricted as to when and for how long you get to see the sights. You can always fly within Egypt to the main areas ... Luxor, Aswan .. Abu Simbel.

Preparation, IMHO, pays for Egypt. Egypt is one country where I strongly recommend something prepackaged, and I say this being an independent backpacker type. There are enough scam artists (and they are agressive) in Egypt, to almost ruin the experience. This is to the normal Egyptian's embarassment, but is unfortunately a fact of life for Egypt as a tourist destination.

I would also recommend you deal with a reputable agency and do some homework on the cruise boats--some are quite worn and shabby (due to disuse and poor maintenance)
here's a sample of the last program offered to me recently--I knew some of the things I wanted and requested them up front:

Thank you for your e mail dated Dec 5. Since you have already been in Cairo, I have not added any touring to the proposal. This can, of course, be added at a later date. You probably have a good idea of the tours you would want, if any. Otherwise, we suggest something along the following lines:

Day 1: Arrive Cairo International Airport, meeting and assistance through customs and transfer to the hotel.

    Day 2,3: free

Day 4: AM or PM: Transfer from the hotel to the airport for flight to Luxor.Transfer to the hotel.

Day 5: optional tour to Dendera or Dendera and Abydos

Day 6: Noon: transfer to the Nile cruise ship.

Day 6-10: on board the cruise ( see attached)

Day 10: AM: transfer to the hotel.

Day 11: AM: Transfer from hotel to the airport for flight to Abu Simbel Half day visit to the Temples of Ramses II and Nefertari. Return flight to Aswan with continuing service to Cairo.Transfer to the hotel.

Day 12: free or full day tour to Alexandria by road with lunch.

Day 13: Transfer from the hotel to the airport for final departure.

    Program includes:

    · All tours and transfers as listed. All entrance fees.Services of an English speaking guide.

    · 5 nights at the Cairo Marriott, Cairo Sheraton , Ramses Hilton or Meridien Pyramids with Buffet Breakfast and tax

    · 2 nights at the Luxor Meridien, Sheraton or Sonesta with Buffet Breakfast and tax

    · 4 night Nile cruise on board the Movenpick HS Radamis II with Full Board

    · 1 night at the Movenpick Hotel, Aswan with Buffet Breakfast and tax ( formerly the Aswan Oberoi)

    · local airfares Cairo/ Luxor and Aswan/ Cairo

    · excursion to the Abu Simbel Temples by air from Aswan

The rate for the above is US$ 1490.00 per person ( double).

Optional tours can be added as follows:

Half day visit to Dendera: per person US$ 42.00

Full day tour to Dendera and Abydos: per person US$ 65.00

Full day tour to Alexandria: per person US$ 105.00

Half day tours in Cairo are in the US$ 30-35.00 per person price range.

For planning purposes, please note that the Movenpick HS Radamis II sails every Tuesday from Luxor to Aswan. The sister ship, the Radamis I sails on Mondays from Luxor. Both ships offer a 3 night cruise back from Aswan. You will see the itineraries for both on the attached sheet. If you use the 3 night cruise, the rate for the tour would be US$ 1370.00 per person.

If you have any questions or need more information, please let us know.

    Sincerely yours,

    Eunice Roy

This is one of the largest agencies specializing in Egyptian travel. You can do your own thing with them or you can get a pre-set package. I hope this helps.
We just got word that Delta will re-establish JFK/CAI--something that thrills me to no end!! So. I'm saving this itinerary. I've went twice in the mid 90's--loved it!@!
