    Default ALERT: Johannesburg

Fuel shortages creating nonrev issues. Delta is advising nonrevs that Monday will be last travel date until further notice. Nonrevs will NOT be boarded beginning Tuesday. If anyone has plans for South Africa, they recommend changing plans A/O.

Ah.. Thank you for this information. I have tentative plans to go to JNB in August of 2013. I understand DL flies from ATL daily. Is this the flight you are referring to? Is this a temporary pause in nonrev travel for this flight?

Thank you for your knowledge! I've never been there before, but would anyone have any good suggestions in nonreving to JNB from the US?

this was temporary--not sure if it's still in place. search the forum and there are lots of tips in some other threads. I can answer questions about JNB airport layovers etc. I've been 5 times now, I think.

Hello, Khalil. What is the date of hire for your employee friend? Are you flexible and can you wait a few days in Joburg? Do you live near there or elsewhere?
Here's what I can tell you:
    Embargo dates are Jul7, Nov 27, Dec 1,20, 21, 28, 29. Jan 1,2. More to follow for 2014.
JNB/ATL is payload optimized, which means it can go out with empty seats and buddy pass riders will be first to be denied boarding. The station mgr is a stickler for on-time so sometimes he cuts off all nonrevs so he won't have to wait for paperwork on them. You have to wait at the desk to get boarding pass, then run to PP control and security with everyone else to get on.
You are only allowed one checked bag and standard carry-on allowance. I'd try to do carry-on only.
I wouldn't travel on dates around embargoes--there will be extra buddies.
What are your target dates for travel?

A tough one but try on the return, DXB - JNB on Qatar or Egypt Air with one stop either DOH or CAI for about $480 - $550. You would have to do a two way (2 passes) for the return. Total maybe around $1200. Not Good! Buy a RT on Qatar for around same price positive space.
