Yes, my family all lives in or around Des Moines. I will likely be moving out of the area at some point in the future, so I will have to plan for that eventually. For now I'm alright with taking a few days unpaid here and there, especially with the savings that will come out of the benefits.

Welcome to the crazy life of a non rev! I've been with Alaska for 16 years and still find it exciting to decide where I want to go next. See Spongebue's post, though. Only someone who works in the airline industry (and we've all done something just like that) would consider going all the way from the mainland to HI for a single day!

Honolulu for the day ... Pah! .. small beer ... the weekend before he left BA a friend of mine did Sydney for the weekend

Anyhow welcome aboard .. it's a weird world in non-rev land and you continually learn about how to get where you want to get .. even after 30+ years.

e.g. the fastest way between two points is often not a straight line on non-rev travel; when travelling to the east you start off heading west and vv; your own airline may be the cheapest fare between two points but may not be the cheapest in time and overall cost

HI in a day??--nothin' special! CVG/CDG for dinner in Paris--home the next day. How 'bout 28 hours in Bejing? Next time, I did DTW to PEK, only to find hubby had been rerouted, so I stayed in Narita overnight and home the next day.
There have to be some pretty wacky routings and quickie destinations in this forum. Grab a seat (I mean on the aircraft) AND GO!

Well future nonrever, the name of the game is to get gone. And far. Some play it here to fly around the world for a day or a night, dinner, a ball game or whatever, and come back to home base. My methodology differs. I like to get gone and keep going. Don't want to see home base for a while. One time I had this theory a long time ago and it took me 3 years to get back to home base. Home base meaning the USA itself. Not home home... When you fly to HNL and walk around Waikiki beach, then the next day, you hop on the plane and keep going a westerly route ever further into the Pacific Ocean, away from where you came from originally, and you know you have a long long time before you even think of returning, and your trip may end up taking you via off routes like MNL/NRT/GUM/SPN/back to NRT......just to try to get on a ride from NRT to SFO to home base at IAH.........whewwww.........who do you think is nonrev king? One whom goes flying around like crazy for a night out on the town or the fool that goes out there and gets lost in the mean streets of an Asian city far deep in the tropical climatic zones of hot stinkin funk pouring into the black rivers with smog choking your ever loving face and everyone wanting to rip you off just to go and do this over and over again like an out of control masacist? Who do you think is cooler eh?????

My #1 Vegas truism - Do not nonrev to Vegas over a holiday weekend - no exceptions.

Thanksgiving holiday travel is hectic, stressful anyway and with reduced schedules/capacity and weather gremlins, non-revving to Vegas is a crap-shoot to say the least - BUT if you have a few days cushion, are open to L.A.+ driving as a backup and flying on Thursday - it could be worth the gamble. Are you lucky?!

The Paris’ Eiffel Tower is a great spot, just know that it can get windy and crowded (especially at night) people like to watch the Bellagio fountain shows.
Of course Vegas being Vegas you can go over the top and take advantage of one of the Paris hotel‘s “Propose in Paris” packages - dinner, champagne, roses at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant (on the 11th floor). They’ll even serve the ring in your dessert or a Eiffel Tower jewelry box, you just have to ask and or course hand over your credit card.

My plans as of now are sat 11/23-thu 11/28.

I'm a Vegas junkie, so I'm all over the Vegas stuff. The reason I picked that week was because its my only full mon-thurs with no class. I'm usually a sun-fri Vegas traveler.

A random question - AA specific.

Say I list for and check in 24h in advance for 3 flights and I make the 1st. Do I just fall out of the que for the others or what happens there?

Multiple listings are frowned upon. It would only be necessary to check-in for the first flight you wish to try for. If you don't make the first flight, you will be 'rolled over' to the next flight by the agent, meaning your name will be transferred to the standby list for the next flight, retaining your original time of check-in.
