Still don't know if this is the answer to future style airplanes. I guess time will tell. So far, I can't say that I like it. Here are my favorite airplanes from best to worst. (Only on airplanes I've worked on and have the schools for.)
1. B757 My favorite. I like it because its straight forward. I like EICAS and easy as hell to fault isolate problems. Corvette in the sky. Only drawback at times is having to pump open those engine core cowls. Test 30/40 bit ancient but straight forward.
2. B777. Very close second. I like the MAT function in the cockpit, a lot like the B757 only huge. I probably know this one the best. I'm proficient on this one and we get it a lot. I don't like the lav issues and plumbing that goes along with this airplane. I understand that the B787 did away with twisting and turns of the waste plumbing that caused lav clog issues on the B777. GOOD! No land verify on this one.
3. B737 NEW GEN's. Or B737-7-8-9. Very simple utilization of the FIM, Nice, clean not many problems or issues. APU changes can be a bear. Land verify is quite simple.
4. B767-400. A lot like the B777 only what I hate about this airplane is the SLAT LOCKOUT procedure to work on engines. Otherwise, not a bad flying machine. I like using the CDU for doing Test 30/40.
5. I'll go with the B787 about here. Very new, a lot of issues at the beginning a bit of a nightmare, but coming around, everyone is getting a lot of exposure and schools, but I don't like the "TOOLBOX" manual, a lot of strong dangerous power on this airplane, super hydraulic pressures that can cut like a knife if not careful. Crazy electronic boxes with anti-freeze running through them. It's just plain different from all other Boeings out there. Not yet sold on it.
6. Airbus 320. Not a Boeing airplane, very different acronyms just to confuse us further. Has a joystick in place of a steering column. Engine open ups and close are a pain in the butt. Naaaa.....don't like it.
7. I'm going to group the B737 CLASSICS along with the MD-80 and the DC-10.....all JUNK as far as I'm concerned and thank God we don't have these anymore.
Heh, I work at the flight training center where all the flight simulators are. My boss' son had a chance to come here on a field trip through his school, but he didn't want to go. My boss later asked him why not, he said it was because they just use a joystick, and what's the point of that? He can do that on a "simulator" at home. My boss had to explain that Airbuses DO use joysticks. He felt pretty stupid after that, since by this point the field trip had come and gone.
