I've only nonrevved on AA once in my life (buddy pass MVD-MIA, pretty sure I was the only nonrev on a wide-open flight) so I can't speak very well to how common this really is. But I did see in another article that AA disputes the numbers, implying that 20,000 number includes nonrevs who no-show at the gate.
