    I'm flying through NRT this weekend (US-China). As I understand it, if you're connecting and it's less than 24 hours, you don't have to pay the departure tax. I've done it before and havne't been charged, but I've never left the terminal. If I exit security will the ticketing agents try to charge me departure tax?

    Thats right... if you are there under 24 hours you do not have to pay the tax( but I think that it is a calender day ie if you are flying out the next day you do have to pay the departure/airport tax) We just traveled from NRT and we stayed for 3 days. One of our zed fares did not have the departure tax but it was only 1300 yen...
