    Default Has Anyone Visited Taipei?

I am planning a short trip next week to Taipei arriving late Tuesday night and departing fairly early Thursday morning. This will be my first visit to Taiwan and I've read a lot and feel pretty safe & secure about going & getting around. But I do have a few questions that I am hoping someone will be able to answer or at least shed some light on. I am curious I can catch a train directly from the airport to the center of Taipei. If anyone is a DL/DL Conx employee & uses the DL Credit Union, did your debit card work at any of the atms? (Mrs767er :P ) And do you think that $5,000 TWD would be enough to have access to for a stay of this long?

Thanks for any & all help, as always, much appreciated.

    Tchau

    Always appreciate the flyin' fools!!
Have never been, don't even know the exchange rate or how much anything costs there--sorry. I've only been to HKG and Guangzhou, soon to visit Beijing. We don't even carry our DL CU card because we have no fees on other cards. I know I'm no help this time--Sorry!

That's okay I have to stop by the CU Monday anyhow, I'll check then. I just hope the loads hold out to & from NRT. Otherwise, I may have to change destinations.

Train, hmm I suggest the bus
Slightly longer but they usually stop right in front of most major hotels. Save you a lot of pain from hauling the luggage up and down stairs of the train station. Cheap about 200NT or so (100nt about 3 bucks I think)

Cards should work if you are cirrus or plus network

How much you need depends on where you stay and what you eat and do. Decent hotels cost about 3000NT per day and plus food etc, that would come out to 5000NT per day. Of course you could go budget and spend about 2000NT per day. There are a lot of love motels in TPE, cheap but not crappy. Some are VERY nicely furnished. But of course you have to bear with your neighbors noise levels. My friend who is a country manager for a large MNC was hosted in a love motel for 3 months before they sorted out his apartment. Only complain he has is he gets pretty frustrated living there.

Around 1998 or so, doing ETOPS flight to HKG, but some lady decided to start to pump out a baby half way from GUM to HKG, so plane diverted to TAIWAN, in Taipei. Taiwanese police show up with uzi's, and made sure nobody left the plane. I had to do an ETOPS pre-departure check, some paperwork involving me to go to the main office to make a phone call to Texas to get some control number, in the middle of the night, raining, and drizzling, cold. Driver almost killed us both by almost slamming into a fuel truck. Took care of business there with the phone call, turned in the paperwork, he said he would have it entered in the computer system. We then offloaded the lady in Taiwan airport, don't know what happened to her, we then took off after I did my business. Then went to HKG, and back to GUM/SPN. Next day I get a phone call from GUM management asking me why I didn't enter the paperwork, to which I replied......"Talk to your man in Taiwan. He said he would take care of that."
Yes, the only time I set foot in Taiwan was on a diversion when lady decided to go into labor 30,000 feet above the clouds.

I did TPE on China Air to break up my LAX-SIN and it was great! Very busy airport and the craziest taxi drivers ever. Food downtown in the village fantastic.
