I did once pre covid Bkk-nrt-Jfk. Had to clear immigration and customs in Nrt then check in at the counter for the next segment. Had no issues at all. On my first visit, I stayed in Tokyo for a few days. In and out on non rev tickets. Again no issues. As long as you leave enough time to clear immigration coming in then security and immigration going out, you should be fine. Do you have privileges on JAL or Vietnam Airlines? I’m a bit ocd when I travel internationally on a zed so I get as many zeds as possible.
