    Default Getting Hired in SLC

    Hey Delta folks,

I worked for Continental Airlines for 3 years. I was furloughed last July. I live in the SLC area and have been watching to see when Delta hires. I would work the ramp, but prefer working the ticket counter. I have not seen any job postings for SLC. I would like to work part time.

Would it be easier to go out of state and then transfer back? Or should I wait for an opening. If I did go out of state and get hired, how long would I have to wait to try and transfer back?

    Any advice would be appreciated,
    Mike

Try checking the regional carriers as well, like Skywest. I think their headquarters are in St. George, maybe you can find a position that would let you commute even?

For what it's worth, here's how I got my job at Northwest at MSP a couple years back (when I wanted to work for an airline and take a free trip or two). I went to MSP's website, and found all the airlines that flew from there. I checked the jobs section for each company, and applied for every job I qualified for (which was mostly limited to summer seasonal, which made things harder but not impossible). I'd do that, but check Wikipedia.. they have a pretty reliable list of airlines and destinations for most (if not all) commercial airports.

Keep your eyes open, Delta is about to start a major hiring blitz in our hubs and major stations...the open positions will first be open for internal and furloughs and then opened up for external applicants....no time frame set yet...hopefully soon...

    Thanks for the responses.

They just started hiring ready reserve in SLC and I applied. I am mostly concerned about flight benefits. However, can you guys tell me what the benefits are as a ready reserve, if I do get hired. I have a online business and so pay doesn't matter as much to me as the benefits do.

I am not really interested in working for a regional carrier. In fact I have 3 years of service with Continental and I figure that I might as well wait for them to bring me back, than go to a smaller carrier. I know that they called in furloughs last month and this month so I believe it is only a matter of time. In fact the only advantage that i see by switching airlines is with Delta. I figure that I might as well work with them since they are the only major with SLC as a hub city.

If you're looking for the flight benefits, SkyWest (a major regional carrier in SLC, which is where I am for training now) has free UA flights and I believe it's also free for employees that work in any way with DL. Unfortunately I don't, but at least I get ID95s with them...

Thanks. I thought that Delta was slowly doing away with Skywest in SLC (other than pilots and others who work onboard the aircraft)? I know that they took over the ramp. All Skywest ramp employees were either picked up by Delta, or no longer have a job.

Can't say I knew that, but I don't think they're going anywhere as far as routes go. With them starting out (and having their OCC) in SGU, SLC is a major stronghold for them and things seem to be working out pretty well for everyone...

Well...I almost had a job. I filled out the application, the personality test, and the ten year background check. I had a phone interview where I was able to ask how the hiring process works. The lady said that it went phone interview, face to face interview, drug test and other prehire requirement test (I think that means a physical fitness type test), and if you made it that far you were assigned a training class. I figured that if I could pass the phone interview then I would have a job. We talked for a few minutes during the phone interview and after she said that she really wanted me to do a face to face interview. I was ecstatic, I figured that I was back in the airline business. About a minute later she comes back on and says that she does not have any appointments available at this time.

WHAT? What do you mean no more appointments? Dejectedly I ask what the next step would be. She said just to wait for a phone call. I asked if they ranked candidates for the job, and she said that they had a system that did that. I asked where I was at in this ranking, and she said that she couldn't say exactly. I asked a couple of question and each time she said "As soon as an interview opens that you will get a phone call". She said this in response to my questions, each time stressing the word will.

So I wonder if she was just getting rid of me, or if she really knew something. Does anyone know how the third party hiring company works?

Nearly the same thing happend to me. I applied once before about 2 years ago. Never heard anything. I applied again recently. I got a phone call from a woman who identified herself as being with Delta Air Lines. (They are a head-hunting agency for DL actually). This was about a week after the job was posted. I had just went out-of-town for a doctor appt THAT DAY when she called. It was a one-day appt. She said the only interview time the station manager was interviewing was tomorrow (the next day) and the latest time was like 2p. No way I could get back in time for it. I told her my situation and she said when/if they move to the next round of interviews, I will get a call back. One week later, I DID get a call back and went through the same telephone interview and scheduled a f2f with the station mgr and performance leader. I was selected for a position but had scheduling conflicts so she asked me to return back when my availability opened up. No big deal. I am still with a regional and still have my seniority for shift bids and flying benefits...which is really all I'm there for anyway. I will get back on with mainline shortly but I'm not sweating it...just saw where this particular station is hiring again. So, keep positive and you'll be fine.
I'd hang on and give it a week or two and if you don't hear anything, call them (the agency). They are pleasant to work with and you will enjoy working with DL.
