papa--you need to ask your employee for the DL rules of nonrev travel you gobefore she can email of fax but you should not use a buddy pass without being properly educated
you don't get upgraded any way but thru DOH seniority
you can check (or not) a bag on most routes--a few routes do not recommend buddies check a bag at all--it may lessen your chance of getting boarded last minute (that's one of the rare ways a buddy who is junior may get a seat instead of you)
