Been there a few times. Not easy at al to access JNB for DL nonrevs. Not impossible but you have to pay attention to off-season. We had a tough time getting out of JNB w/25 yrs (at the time) so we had zeds for EK to go to DBX. Worst NR flt EVER.
Are you going to Vic Falls? If you go to Zim side you need yellow fever vac (which we have). We plan to go South Africa and Zim/Zam, maybe even add Botswana (Chobe) for 2 wk anniv trip. We've done 6 safaris and use SA for base.
I will be happy to assist with my files/info for my sources. I'd be looking at travel in June for off-season if going to JNB (reverse seasons). It's pretty interesting to get up and bundle in hats, gloves, blankets, hot water bottles, etc, for game drive at 6am! Hot coffee sure felt good! Zim/Zam will be much different temps but heed the rainy season--Mar-April can be VERY wet.
BTW--We have only done SAA flights for connections .
