    Default Into Africa

I'm considering a trip to Zambia this spring. Does anyone have any experience trying to do it nonrev? I guess we'll have to grab one or more regional flights, so I'm wondering how to manage that in the best way. It's just a wild hair right now, but thought I'd check with Delta folks first. Thanks.

Personally I just put on a cap. I just couldn’t resist.

Been there a few times. Not easy at al to access JNB for DL nonrevs. Not impossible but you have to pay attention to off-season. We had a tough time getting out of JNB w/25 yrs (at the time) so we had zeds for EK to go to DBX. Worst NR flt EVER.
Are you going to Vic Falls? If you go to Zim side you need yellow fever vac (which we have). We plan to go South Africa and Zim/Zam, maybe even add Botswana (Chobe) for 2 wk anniv trip. We've done 6 safaris and use SA for base.
I will be happy to assist with my files/info for my sources. I'd be looking at travel in June for off-season if going to JNB (reverse seasons). It's pretty interesting to get up and bundle in hats, gloves, blankets, hot water bottles, etc, for game drive at 6am! Hot coffee sure felt good! Zim/Zam will be much different temps but heed the rainy season--Mar-April can be VERY wet.
BTW--We have only done SAA flights for connections .

I'm curious, why Zambia? Where are you going? BTW--there is a new combo Zim/Zam visa $50 for US citizens (and many others). There's that yellow fever deal, tho. I highly recommend Sunrock Guest House (great owners) w/free RT shuttle JNB. Less than $100/nt. Good option if you get dissed for return flt.
Other flt options are Skyteam partners or zed on LH.

The capital and largest city of Zambia is Lusaka. According to my best friend, Wikipedia, the only destination outside of Africa that they serve is Dubai by EK. That may be your easiest option, but I'm not sure how hard ATL-DXB is on DL (it's actually not bad on UA out of IAD)

Our church supports an orphanage/school outside of Lusaka. We'd be there to assess current needs and look for NGO collaboration to address them. So it's not a pleasure trip, but there will be some touring on the side.

Quite admirable! ATL/DXB is not too difficult. You may encounter heavier loads when the horse racing crowd is actively selling studs, breeding rights, etc. At least you may have shot at biz class on 777. If you need to overnight, I have a hotel we used. Traditional and close to spice market and a museum to kill time.

What's the best way to investigate routes and carriers and loading for Lusaka as final destination?

Thank you very much! We'll have meetings in town and I will have some site survey work, so I would prefer a dryer time of year. ;-)
Nonrev flying has already enabled some wonderful opportunities that would have otherwise been much more difficult to pursue. We are very grateful.

I'll post more as plans come together. FOMTS (Father of my three sons)
