I've monitored this route over the past 2 yrs. Depends on when seasonal service starts, and what day of the week you want to nonrev. If you're shooting for a cruise, I'd be considering arriving several days prior and having Plan A, B and C. IST might be good choice for backups.
Seriously, check out IST for a few days prior and if you need, Pegasus might have a flight at reasonable cost. It is LCC, so be aware of those pitfalls...Otherwise, TK is prob good option for nonrev.

It is tough, but we did it in March of 2011.
It was a 763 going over, with about 10 open up front and about 10 in the back. We did get on up front
It was a 333 on the return and it was wide open with 20+ up front and 100+ in the back.
ATH service begins on 3/29
IST does not begin until 6/16

I think IST used to start earlier. Go figure! I'm planning on leaving the 9th of May. It's showing wide open now so I hope it stays that way! Just trying to gauge an idea. Thanks!

Wow, that is late too. That route should be year round in my opinion.
I made a list of start and end dates for all seasonal service so I could be ready to jump on one, lol
