USAirways has applied for approval to fly to both Shannon and Dublin this Summer. My family is now making plans to visit the emerald isle when our service starts.

We are researching hotels, tours, things to do and places to stay. We have rented cars in England before so a tour bus is not necessary. We would appreciate any places-to-stay, things-to-do info you may have.

    Thanks in advance!

My daughter Courtney stayed here. It is her boyfriends uncles home. He lives in Illinois and rents the Ireland cottage out. Rates are very reasonable but you can always ask if he'd discount more. It is a 90 min drive from Shannon. Being the daughter of a airline employee for 23 yrs, Courtney has stayed in a lot of places and B&B's. She said this was by far the best place ever.
Check out the website even if you are not interested in renting the cottage. It is very informative.

I forward the site to my Sisters. Looks like a great place and very centrally located. I will let you know if we end up staying there.

My girlfriend and I went 2 years ago and i'm trying to get back. We both fell in love with the place. We never made a room reservation and we never had a problem getting wonderful places. B&B is the way to go. There is a great place to stay in Adare called Churchview Inn. Run by a lovely couple that couldn't do enough for us. We walked to everything in the city from there. In Blarney we stayed at The Whithouse adn again it was wonderful. We walked to Blarney castle & to the woolen mills and found a great little pub. This was a great place for making day trips from. Hope you enjoy your time as much as we did.

    CSSUP,

Might I say, what a good choice to go to Ireland. I lived there for a few years and have been back with my wife later. You will NOT need any reservations in Ireland. There is a b&b every where you turn and the rates are great. The best thing to do is just go in and ask to see the room. If you dont like it, move on and find another. They all vary in style but are mostly the same. As for things to see, it depends on what your interests are.. visit www.shamrock.org
and that will give you several ideas. but I would suggest seeing the Blarney Castle and a Must is a tour of the waterford crystal building. you get to see how the crystal is made and watch as they blow the glass. also take a walk in down town Dublin. It has a lot of shopping and at the ends of the main street they have statues and if you look closely at them, you will see the bullet holes from when they were having war in Dublin.

There are so many other things to do, I just dont know where to lead you. Take a good camera and if you have one, take a digital camera. then you can load up on pictures and decide what to keep when you get back. Hey, also drop in to a little shop and buy a drink called Lilt. it is great. it has pinnapple juice in it. great tasting soda pop.

Enjoy and come back and let us know how it was.

Oh, Evan, you make it sound so wonderful. I would dearly love to go to Ireland someday. All I need is more time! Ah, the life of an airline employee.... the ability to go anywhere in the world and no time to actually do it!

I'm prolly a little late with this info (Just joined the group)

But The Great Southern Hotel chain in Ireland do give airline discounts.

    Great Southern Hotel

I stayed at the one at the SNN airport last March on my own and several times before when passing through on company business. The one in Shannon is quite nice and the staff was very friendly.

I suggest you visit the website and find the local number for the one you are planning on staying with. Then call them directly and inquire about an "airline staff discount".

As far as rental cars, I picked one up at the SNN airport at the Alamo/National counter and I think they offered a discount as well. I'm not sure on that. But the rates were lower than what I expected. You can book the cars online before you leave. So you can have an idea of costs.

As for driving in Ireland, I picked up an International Drivers License from AAA in Orlando before I left.

Driving around Ireland is the only way to go in my opinion. You can get off the beaten path and explore.

    Hope this helps...
