We are taking a cruise from Dover 19 April, arriving Rome 30 April. Can anyone recommend places to stay? We would like to spend a couple of days at each place and realize Europe is very expensive so any info on reasonably priced lodgings will be very appreciated! Many thanks. Lois

Lois,
You could try starting at the following site for Dover .. http://www.4hotels.co.uk/uk/dover.html which should give you an idea on prices and locations. I believe that the Ramada is close to the Ferry port. You could also check out http://www.doverweb.co.uk for more info on the area.

Hello Paul! Many thanks for your suggested web sites regarding Dover lodgings. They are very helpful. We are still looking for Rome hotels and if anyone knows of moderate priced accommodation there we would be glad to hear from you. Thanks, Lois

For a modestly priced hotel in Rome I have stayed at the Hotel Forte on via Margutta just a few blocks southeast of the Piazza de Popolo. It is on the second floor of a building on a street of antique shops. It is also within 2 blks of the Spanish Steps. Just a few buildings north of the hotel is the house where Gregory Peck lived in the movie Roman Holiday. Google "Hotel Forte" as they may have a website.

Did you know that there are convents that you can stay at in Italy that are very reasonable? I think I've seen information on it from Rick Steves:
