We are a group of seven couples(mostly retired Airline employees w/a few retired mil. booked on Grand Princess sailing from Venice 5 Oct. going to Rome, Naples, Athens, Istanbul, Marsaille, Barcalona. Nice trip, but re: shore excursions. I'm researching the possibility of private tours vs. Princess sponsored land tours.

planning your own shore excursion will save you lots of money, esspecially since you have a small group. I will look for some information for you.

We always do our own exploring. We basically look at the tours Priness (or any other line) has available, and then research on line to book with a private group ourselves. Renting a car/van and visiting all the sites on your own will not only save you tons of money, but you will be able to see a good bit more.
