    Hi Patch
First you may want to narrow things down a bit. Turkey is a huge and diverse country. Try to factor in your interests, amount of time you have etc to come up with which chunk of the country you'd like to experience.

As a starter I'd head for the capital Istanbul. A remarkable metropolis, where Asia meets Europe in both the geographic and cultural sense. Accommodation runs the gamut from budget to top class hotels as would be expected from a world class city. Most of the global hotel chains have a presence there and they all offer airline staff rebates. On the other side of the accommodation coin, you have quite a number of hostels and pensions in the main tourist areas around the Blue Mosque and Topkim (sp.???) museum. And a visit to the bazaar in Istanbul is a must.

If you're looking for more beach (you didn't say when you plan to visit, but the winter months, while pleasant are still not warm enough for swimming) head for the coastal resorts of Antalya, Izmir or Bodrum. You'll still find here the mixture of western and oriental flavour.

Deeper into Turkey there are some amazing and stimulating archeaological sights.

Cost-wise, Turkey is also quite affordable.

Like I said you'll need to do some more research and match that with the type of holiday you're looking forward to.

Hope that can help with your planning.

    Regards

Istanbul is not the capital of Turkey. Ankara is the capital of Turkey. Yours in the cause of geographical correctness.
