Any help on this would be great my wife has been given 2 buddy passes by a US Airways employee and she is wanting for her and one of her friend to go backpacking thru Europe from July 10-21 she would be flying from Kansas City(MCI) to and Europe destination that US air goes to.The employee has told her that he didn't think she would have much trouble getting on a flight since the US dollar is so weak right now .Does anyone know what her chances of getting a flight to Europe and more importantly the chances of getting back are without being stranded in the airport for several days or even weeks. And again any advice on this would be greatly appreciated
    thanks

I would guess it would depend on where she's traveling--eastern or western Europe? What are her options for cities? (ie--will she try for Rome or Pisa? Is she thinking Spain or Portugal?) certain Eu residents take vacation for weeks--frequently in July or Aug and the States is a prime target for them to fly here, shop and spend Euros, so keep that in mind. It aslo depends which gateway cities she can use in the US. You'll get lots of great advice with more details. We're here....

I would think she'd have an ok shot. Europe, and really anywhere, is pretty hairy in summer. The backpacking thing is a plus, though. If you're just traveling through Europe, you should be pretty flexible with your departure/arrival point. If Zurich doesn't work, fly to Milan, etc. It is very good to have that flexibility. As far as coming back, talk to the US Air employee from whom you got the passes, and see how loads are. Pick the city with the most seats/frequency to fly out of. Leave an extra day or 2 just in case, and soak up the adventure of it. Confirmed is for wimps! Nothing like losing all hope, frowning and trying to figure out what to do, and then hearing your name. Literally the last flight I cleared I jumped and made the gate agent in ATL laugh.

Plus, theres nothing like doing a supercheap backpacking trip in the crappiest run down hostels, and then flying back in Business Elite.

We're all happy to assist you should you need anything further.

I'll have to help my nephew decide which city will be best for him to exit Europe this summer, too.

What are her options? Are you talking flying back into Philly or ???
    It might make a difference.

Example--Boston nephew is going to Tel Aviv this summer early June. Options are JFK or ATL.
Loads are much better via ATL (and JFK is almost always booked in Business class) so he'll have to go BOS/ATL/TLV.
Return could be AMS, BRU, CDG or FRA. Probably best to try CDG first option because he can fly to any one of JFK, ATL or CVG. He can also take the train to either AMS or BRU if CDG is bad.
Since I live CVG he can break here before going to BOS.

Just some factors to consider plus the possibility of high student/backpacker ratio of travelers.
Is there an option for her to pay a fee to change her return city?
    Don't forget PLAN B...

I don't think they have for sure made their minds up on where they will fly to in Europe but I'm pretty sure that they have to go from MCI to PHL on any city in Europe that US Airways goes to I just don't know what her chances of getting a return flight are going to be since my understanding of how US Airways works they only have 1 flight per day out of the Europe cities that they serve and the buddy passes that have been given to my wife cargo and freight have a higher priority over her getting a seat.Do you know of anyone who has used these to fly to Europe during peak season..
