Does anyone know if we pay departure taxes in LHR on a connection less than 24 hrs to Africa?

Technically you are supposed to if you're on a space-available ticket out of LHR. Since there is absolutely no way to guarantee that you will be (or for that matter intend to be) accommodated on a flight within 24 hours, the ticketing carrier has to assume you are stopping over and, thus, collect the APD (UK departure tax). Some carriers fail to do this but, guaranteed, the other airline (i.e., the one that lifted the coupon) will bill them for it unless there happens to be a bilateral agreement not to bill taxes not shown on the ticket.

I see you are a CO flyer. You will have to pay them leaving LHR going to Africa, since they will be built into your ZED fare. The good news is on the way home if you connect back to CO, they will waive the dept. taxes if you spend less than 24 hrs in LHR. Save your OAL boarding pass and send proof of connection to the employee travel office within a certain time frame and they won't payroll deduct.
