    Default KEF OFF-season

OK, never considered it an option in Feb, but...has anyone been then? I'm not a cold-weather gear girl. It's a possibility for Boss next month and for a long layover I thought, "what the heck?". Last time I looked, Blue Lagoon is shut down for tourism maintenance issues so I don't need to consider that an option.
I have to look at tripadvisor for KEF tips. Why not start here?

Here's something that should be a good help for ya. FI is actually really cool about sharing loads if you know how to reach them. And even that's not hard. Send them an email at frim@icelandair.is (not .com). They will give you actual numbers like you'd expect to get around here - both open seats and number of standbys. When I do that, I generally get a response around 3:00AM Mountain time that morning, which I assume is opening of business out in Iceland.

Obviously, this may not be needed in your case, if you're taking DL. However, here's one other little trick: that response I got was from Icelandair, but the "name" was some really long strange Icelandic word. I plugged that into Google Translate to see what it meant. Tourism. Icelandair is huge on promoting tourism in Iceland, with the free stopovers enroute for paying pax. I'm sure if you want to email them a few questions, probably specific where possible, and maybe throw in a load check just in case you need a backup, they'd be happy to help!

Great info if I need Plan B to return or if we decide to travel on our own someday. I would be flying DL and since it's earlier than normal "seasonal"loads haven't looked bad. I'll know in the next for days if it shows up on Boss' new schedule. Thanks for the email.

    Another possible backup

WOW Air just announced $99 fare LAX/KEF there are a lot of fees-fees-fees, but, if you just carry on, are good with not having an assigned seat and pay online (hmmm that sounds so familiar)
Flights operate 4 days a week with connecting flights to Europe
LAX service to begin June 15

SFO service to begin June 9 and will operate 5 day a week.
Wow Air to start $99 flights from LAX to Iceland and $199 flights from LAX to Europe - LA Times

We went last May, when the flight started for the season. Over 100 open seats each way.
It was nice, and we had clear blue skies, but it was COLD!
Temperature was about 30, but wind chills were in the teens.
We hired a car and drove the Golden Circle and then went down to the southern coast.
The waterfalls were amazing, but you could only stand to be out of the car for a few minutes.
I think it is a pretty place and very interesting. I would go back, and may do so this season.

We did not go to blue lagoon. I had always though it was a natural hot spring, but it is all man made.
My Icelandic friend said it is an overpriced tourist trap. I would still like to see it, but the natural countryside is much better.

The thing with Iceland is the temps do not very much. Its in the 30's in the winter and the 50's in the summer. Biggest issue is rain and wind. weather.com has highs/lows both in the 30's right now with rain almost everyday and a 20mph wind.

I believe it's closed for updates/repairs, etc. I think it's for tourists but some locals might go if they got a Groupon!
