    Our regular car insurance is good enough. Once a couple years back my husband had a wagon bender in a rental car between him and a horse driven Amish plow. Of course the horses were uninsured. Our agency did not even laugh too much at him and settled the claim.

    I NEVER take the insurance! It's nothing short of highway robbery! Our personal insurance covers us for any vehicle we drive and I always charge the rental to a card that offers rental car protection.

    I also never take the insurance. It is a ripoff &my auto insurance covers rental cars. Just make sure your auto ins. covers rental cars.

    Ditto on the above advice. I just checked recently and I have full coverage for rental. When I was smarter and both my vehicles were paid for, all I had was liability so I made sure that I used a credit card that included car rental insurance.

    Hi - this is a reply to an old post but I keep
    a Diner's Club as they are primary insurance on
    a rental car. If you have an accident you won't get bumped up to a higher rate with your regular insurance. Pat

    Hi,

    Another reply to an old post but some helpful information...

    I found the my insurance company does not cover me out of the country. I called AX and for twenty something $s, they activated a feature whereby each time I rent with my card, I am covered with primary coverage. So it's twenty something per rental rather than per day like it would be if you got it from the rental car company.

    The only place I've ever found it to be a massive rip-off is regretably Stateside. The CDW at USD20-26 per day is a killer - and unavoidable if you're not a local and have no local car insurance to fall back on.
    I have heard of a recent insurance offer whereby you can pay something like AUD150.00 per year and be covered for CDW overseas. Sounds like a good plan to me !!
