A NY Times reporter sent me an e-mail via The Nonrev Network to ask about it and nonrev travel. He called after I sent him my phone number. We discussed a lot of things about nonreving and the site and he said he was going to check it out some more and call me again. He never did but it seems the only quote he took from our conversation was a negative one.

I said, "It's really not quite the benefit it used to be."

I saw the article online first but then someone brought me a paper - I had no idea - it made the front page - the front page of the freaking NY Times!!

When I made that particular statement I was thinking air fare is cheaper and seats are less plentiful. Those two factors do diminish the value of the benefit don't they? What do you think?

There was a positive note to the article even though it was titled "Airline Workers Are Left at Gate Mourning a Perk". It told about B.J. and Tony Morris from DL that have racked up 2.3 million miles of air travel. It has a link to their web site that chronicles their travel.

Here's the link to the artilce:

So Chris, a reporter for the NY Times contacted and interviewed you and then used a quote of yours to give his nonrev travel article credibility. Hmmm, I think that makes you what the media calls an "industry expert"...now, that's impressive.

I don't think so. It was more like he grabbed the one thing from my conversation that he wanted to hear to make his point. He just quoted me as an airline employee and made no mention of The Nonrev Network.

Flying non-rev is not free especially if it's international. With all the taxes they charge to fly across the pond it's almost $300 to fly non-rev to the UK.

To back up Chris, I'm in the middle of planning my latest escapade over to Nth America for a whole month in November. As I'm going over with a mate this time, I'm not going to play the nonrev lotto, but am finding bargains almost everywhere I look. So far I've got my SYD-HNL-SYD confirmed for just over AUD500.00 (wholesale consolidator fare), last night found a HNL-YVR for USD150.00 online, DEN-ORD for USD70.00 etc etc. While not "free", they're darn good value and certainly cheap for the distances I'm travelling - not to mention I can plan other things like rental cars and hotels with confidence as I'm pos space.
I admit I do have the luxury of being able to use a Visit Nth America airpass which are USD100.00 per coupon/flight number once you are past the 3 coupon lead-in price. The airpass allows me to take those longer haul transcontinental busy routes flights at around USD120.00 when you divide the number of segments against the coupon costs. All I need now is for HA to reapply the often seen USD99 one way from LAX-HNL and I'm set !!
At this stage it looks like I'll be able to get SYD-HNL-YVR-YYC-DEN-ORD-WAS//BOS-YHZ-YUL-ORD-OKC-SFO-HNL-SYD for around AUD1500.00 all up. Costs more than a ZED, way more than FOC but almost the same as if I had back-up ZED's/ID's (vital considering HNL and USA Thanksgiving dates are part of the trip).

Being a nonrev (or as we call ours, "Cons" !) really isn't as good as it used to be.
One place where it is still good value is for cheaper hotel rates - have been locking in USD79's and the suchlike for Sheraton/Westin/Marriott type places in prime areas of the cities we are visiting. But that's another thread.

That depends on your airline. I've done a couple of DL flights to London and the taxes were $58 RT. I just got back from Japan and the taxes were $0 as they were for Santiago, Chile.
