ATA Closes Operations and Files for Bankruptcy With Loss of Charter Contract, Surging Fuel

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- ATA Airlines shut down operations and stranded thousands of travelers Thursday when an unexpected loss of key charter flights and soaring fuel costs forced the carrier into bankruptcy.

...........................................

You know it is a crying shame and a total reflection of how some people are so ME-ME-ME it is sickening...2200 people lost their jobs, their livelihood and the means for taking care of themselves and their families - and passengers are complaining to the media that their vacations has been ruined...boo-who!!!!!

Always sad to see a carrier shut down. Aloha and now ATA, in the last few days. Unfortunately the entire airline industry is suffering.

Wow! What a smack in the patootie the industry has got in the last 24 hours! First four major carriers get grounded, now ATA goes down in an instant -

It's very disconcerting to wonder who's going to get slapped next

*eta*

Good god... just reading a bit more on it - people just called to say "By the way, you're now looking for a new job..." How scary is that?

Sending out good vibes to our brothers and sisters to weather this storm.

Too sad. I wonder who will be next. That's 3 airlines in four Days. Aloha and ATA and also Champion Airlines ceased operations yesterday. Champion Airlines flew alot of Government and Professional Sports Charter Flights. The next couple years will be very interesting to say the least for all of us.

I read an article once that listed 3 things that make industries volatile:

1. high capitalization
2. unionized labor
3. dependence on natural resources (like fuel)

The airline industry is one of the very few that has all 3!

I have to disagree with this statement. Unionized labor doesn't make a company or an industry volatile.
When labor (union or not) and management work in partnership, both reap rewards.
