Exclamation Tag Your Own Baggage- Trial

"Some major airlines are considering letting passengers tag their own checked bags at the airport before boarding their flights."

Pax tagging their own luggage, I see lost luggage written all over this one.

    Default WestJet does this already!

    Hey,

WestJet (Canada's 2nd largest carrier) already uses passenger self baggage tagging... Currently this is done out of YVR, YYC, YEG, and YYZ, . The airline has reduced wait times considerably. In YVR the wait during peak times for check in oftern exceeded 40 minutes and with self bag tagging the wait is now down to 20 minutes during peak periods.

    Here is some information http://www.westjet.com/guest/en/trav...-tagging.shtml

Is there a check bag fee at WestJet, or is this "a la carte"? LOL!

Haha... while you are at it check out Qantas "Next Generation Check-in" - use your frequent flyer card to swipe. You then get an sms, and finally a coupon at gate. I think the goal is bag self tagging later. Next Generation Check-in from Qantas

In SIN the GHA SATS have self check in kiosks equipped with bag scales. As far as I know they can print boarding passes but don't think they do... I never see the machines used.

On a serious note.... currently WestJet allows two free bags, however starting in January 2011 WestJet will allow one free bag and a second bag for $20.00. In addition WestJet will lower the third bag fee from $75.00 to $50.00, so for three bags it will be $5.00 less than it is currently (I could not imagine travelling with 3 bags... 1 bag is a nightmare sometimes). In addition to the checked baggage allowance, each guest is allowed to travel with 2 carry-on items.

I am guessing that there will be an increase in the amount of carry-on aboard our flights.

I recently flew on CO from YYC to IAH and could not believe the amount of carry-on and the size of some of the bags!

...the good thing is that although you are self tagging your bag, you still have to see a customer service agent who will verify the tags are on correctly, as well to weigh you bag... this is when the "a la carte" pricing starts if your bags are overweight!

You know it, with checked bag fees come more carry-ons, overstuffed bags and backpacks so bulky that they bang-bang-bang every seat as they’re carried down the aisle.

    Strangest carry-on I’ve seen
a full scale replica of a three-masted schooner- sails unfurled, of course. Yo ho!
