US officials want aircraft using California's John Wayne airport to carry out a new kind of take off and, if the measure is implemented, other United States airports could follow its lead.
Already, passengers leaving SNA experience a steep climb-out when departing. Now, in a bid to lower associated noise pollution levels, authorities want to see a curving climb-out procedure adopted.
While aircraft taking off from John Wayne currently have to pull up at a sharp angle, they would also have to turn so as to face out over Newport Beach rather than over localised communities, as they do at present.
John Wayne Airport Take Offs
In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration - which oversees all commercial aircraft operations in the United States - confirmed it would look into this issue, adding that right now it has no knowledge of whether large airliners can carry out demanding take offs of this kind.
If, though, the John Wayne Airport take off proposals become compulsory, they could prompt other airports to act similarly and take steps to minimise aircraft noise as far as possible. "We'll do anything we can to reduce the impact", Keith Curry - the Mayor of Newport Beach - stated in comments quoted by the Los Angeles Times.

John Wayne Airport boasts three terminals - A, B and C - all featuring fast-tracked security screening and free Wi-Fi facilities. Currently, 13 carriers use John Wayne Airport: AirTran Airways, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Frontier Airlines, Interjet, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, United Express, US Airways, US Airways Express and Westjet.
The standard aircraft take off angle at airports is 15 degrees. However, at John Wayne Airport, it is 25 degrees. The idea is that by climbing more steeply, then rapidly reducing power to the engines, Orange County's wealthy residents are not exposed to anything but the lowest achievable noise levels. Now, that concept could be taken yet further.
