Default international connection using same airline ZED

Has anyone connected internationally using the same airlineZED ticket?
If I had to guess it would depend on the airport and airlineif you had to leave security and start your new leg at the ticket counter.
Possible scenario, heading to Cambodia, I can fly Unitedfrom SFO to ICN, then ZED on Asiana to REP. In this scenario I would guess I would have to leave the airport thenhead to the Asiana ticket counter to check in for the ZED. This routing gives me a 4 hour layover thatis doable.
The other scenario is to ZED from SFO to ICN on Asiana andthen connect on Asiana to Cambodia. Thisrouting gives me 1 hour 15 minutes to connect, if I had to leave the airportand re-enter then this would probably not be possible. I am not sure if you could check in for bothflights in SFO and not deal with the ticket counter in ICN.
    Any thoughts?

Can't you nonrev on DL? You could head to BKK layover and take TG next day. (or maybe SIN and connect there?) PS--how long is Asiana flt ICN/REP? We flew KE ICN/DPS on miles and it was about 8 hours, I think. If you've been to ICN, you know it's a great airport but REALLY HUGE. KE has zed low for DL. Not sure what Skywest has in place.

It really depends on the airline. I've flown AA to LHR connecting to BA but I was able to check in at BA at JFK before heading to LHR the last few trips. The first time I took BA from LHR, I went to the flight connections desk at LHR where I was able to check in for the onward BA flight. The agent told me I was supposed to clear immigration, go landside to check in then come back thru security but he made an exception. I would think that ICN has some kind of flight connection center at ICN where you could check-in for the Asiana flight instead of clearing immigration but I have no experience doing this at ICN.

It depends on the airline, airport and country. I non-reved to NRT on AC and connected to BKK on TG and UA without going back to the main counters. All I had to do was go through a quick security check in the transit area and then proceed to the transfers desk to pick up my boarding pass. Another time I flew CHC-SYD on NZ then connected to BKK on TG. For this example I cleared security again and was then able to go straight to the gate to check-in and receive my boarding pass.

Only in PVG have I had to go all the way back out to the main check-in-in counters. This was because we had to clear immigration upon arrival.

mrs767er, unfortunatly we do not "officially" have a ZED agreement with TG. But, it comes up on myIDtravel and some people have used it with success and others have been denied so I would not like to take the chance.
I would love to take Delta but I would only have 45 minutes to catch the connecting flight and that is probably pushing it and if I missed it it would be 24hrs for the next flight.
I think the ICN to REP is 5 hours or something like that. Problem with going to BKK is UA and DL land close to midnight so would have to wait for awhile to maybe have success on TG. Going thru ICN I would land in REP before the UA/DL flights get to BKK saving 10-12 hours (even more if taking bus from BKK to REP).
Also we are still waiting for KE to inform us if we will get to ZED with them or not. Right now NO
I think the only way for me to ZED to REP is Asiana, or try on Thai Airways and take the chance.

Thanks everyone, from our company website people said that ICN is one of the best airports for travellers and they do have a transit area so you do not have to go outside and back in. Also, they mentioned you can check in at the Asiana gate.

Hi Offroader – you asked for thoughts – here are mine….

Just to reconfirm what others have said about it depending on airline & country etc. I would also mention that it can also depend on the load factor on the flights in those cases where the airline might be willing to check your bags all the way. And if your bags are not checked all the way, you will have little option but to go collect from the carousel on other side of immigration.

As an aside, I did look at the UA and OZ flights on that route and see that they both have a very varied on time performance history, with, on balance (during period 19 Aug – 02 Sep), flights arriving later rather than earlier.

I would agree that the routing you have chosen is the best from SFO to REP – but would very strongly suggest you use UA to ICN and have an OZ zed as (last ditch) back up, regardless of whether OZ can tell you or not that they would or might check your bags right through.

The main point is that you probably would not want to chance any connection problems when there is only one onward flight a day. (Four days a week if you were thinking of travel before 28 Oct. But from your original post – I guess it is Nov onwards).

    Best regards - Lee
