Default Rental Car in PHX? Possible walk down Buckeye...

Striking shuttle bus drivers at PHX walked off the job on Tuesday in a dispute that could affect the 25,000 people who use rental cars and travel within the airport's terminals daily.
Union officials said an estimated 180 drivers and other related workers took to the picket lines at the off-airport rental car facility that serves the US's 10th busiest airport, protesting a contract proposed by Veolia Transportation.
"We don't want to put anybody in the general public out, but Veolia is giving us no choice," Bob Bean, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1433, told Reuters news agency. The union represents the striking workers.
"They continue to bargain with us in bad faith," said Bean, adding that medical insurance increases and working conditions are at the heart of the impasse...

IF YOU ARE IN PHX, PLEASE UPDATE...

PHX has extremely high rental car fees. I never pick up a car there. If the hotel shuttles are out, you could take a cab to a pick up location. It’s been awhile but as recall a cab ride to the Enterprise location ran about $25. With all the added fees and taxes at PHX we considered that a bargain.

How about the cab ride back to the airport when you drop off your car? For the RT cab fare, you could have rented a car for a full day. Sounds penny wise to dollar foolish.

Normally I suggest a shuttle ride to a hotel in Scottsdale, most of the hotels have a rental car desk in their lobby, so you avoid all the extra airport taxes and fees, and trust me, they are substantial-
    The breakdown
    % of rental price taxes
    11.11% airport concession recovery fees
    5% vehicle license surcharge
    3.25% stadium tax
+ a Trans Priv Tax(???) and additional state sales taxes

    Additional Fees
$6 per day customer facility fee (helps pay for the rental car center)
$0.70 per day (maintenance fee for rental car center)
$0.47 per day Energy recovery fee

Bottom line, add an additional 45% to your rental car cost at PHX

These high fees started years ago when the new stadium was being built. When the cost had been paid for, the fees (suprise!) never went away. Sky Harbor is definitely one of the most expensive - fee wise - airports to pick up a car in the country. If staying in the downtown Phoenix or Tempe area, the light rail leaves from the airport now. Anywhere else, check the cost to rent a car at the airport vs. going to your destination by taxi or Supershuttle and renting a car there. In my opinion, if you are renting for up to 4 days, picking up from the airport is worth it. If you are going to be here a week or more, it is way too expensive.

By the way, this story is not big on the local news so we have no updated information about it.
